Egg Farmers of Canada (EFC) is presently seeking an Economist to join our Market Intelligence team. Reporting to the Manager of Market Intelligence, the primary responsibilities of the role include conducting accurate, comprehensive, and timely analysis, forecasts, reports and recommendations with respect to Egg Farmers of Canada's operational requirements.
The Economist acts as a key contributor to EFC's operational projects and works with unit analysts to provide training and quality control.
This position is well-suited for someone who is comfortable creating projections related to the egg market, and who enjoys analyzing data independently to understand and solve business problems.
Duties and responsibilities :
Market Research, Analysis and Forecasting
- Perform macro- and micro-analytical activities relevant to Canadian egg markets and provide insight and recommendations to management
- Interpret information and data sets to assess current market trends
- Contribute to the development and continual improvement of data, environmental scanning, analysis, forecasting, and reporting to assess relevant industry trends in Canada, the US and internationally
- Build and improve economic forecasting models for egg production, demand and prices by using econometric models and machine learning techniques
- Assist in maintaining and cultivating relationships with industry members and organizations to gain and report on market insights
Project Management, Execution and Development of Programs
- Work closely with the EFC team and the stakeholders on existing programs and projects
- Assist in the development, execution and administration of new programs and projects as directed by the Manager
- Contribute to the management of crisis or emergency situations, specifically in regard to market intelligence and analysis.
- Present research, analysis, forecasting, project and new program updates to the Manager, COO, EFC Board of Directors, and EFC Executive Committee, when needed.
Supervision and Training
- Ensure quality control of the Market Intelligence unit's regular reports and presentations.
- Monitor information flow from the Market Intelligence unit to ensure communication, level of confidentiality, and tone are consistent with EFC.
Work with the Market Intelligence Analysts to correct any issues in this area.
- Train new unit staff in terms of the unit s business objectives.
- Document standard procedures and contribute to continual process improvement
- Assume full responsibility of the unit's regular tasks and ad-hoc requests when the Manager is away.
Qualifications and Skills
- Advanced knowledge of programming languages (e.g. Python, R, STATA or a related software), MS Excel (pivot tables and advanced formulas) and preferably Tableau
- Proficient statistical and mathematical skills including methodologies and techniques (e.g. advanced regression analysis, ARIMA models, Monte Carlo simulations, etc.
and the ability to prepare estimates and forecasts using econometric models and machine learning techniques.
- Strong problem-solving skills including the ability to apply logical and evaluative thinking to problem identification and resolution
- Proven ability to work both independently as well as to collaborate with team members across functions and at all levels through an open, engaging, and collaborative approach
- Ability to multi-task, take initiative and be results-oriented
- Strong communication skills including the ability to produce effective written documents and make effective, well-structured presentations tailor-made to the intended audience.
- Excellent attention to detail
Education and Experience :
- 3-5 year's forecasting experience in a similar Economist role or as an Economic Analyst
- Master's degree in economics or statistics with a concentration in statistical / quantitative methods, and mathematical modeling.
- Bachelor's degree in economics, or any other related discipline
