WaterSMART Solutions | A Hazen Company is seeking an Instrumentation & Control Systems Engineer to join our Calgary, Alberta office. This role will serve as a Discipline Lead on water and wastewater projects across Canada and the United States, providing technical leadership and project delivery support. The successful candidate will work independently on projects, be a part of multidisciplinary teams, and act as a trusted technical advisor to clients. This position offers the opportunity to support I&C standards, project delivery approaches, and the evolution of OT and automation systems across the firm.

Key Responsibilities :
Technical Leadership & Design
Serve as Lead for I&C systems on medium to large, complex water and wastewater projectsEvaluate, select, specify, and engineer I&C systems including PLC, SCADA, DCS, networking, data acquisition, trending, and alarm management systemsDevelop I&C designs using sketches, P&IDs, control narratives, architecture diagrams, schematics, and installation detailsPrepare technical memoranda, reports, studies, specifications, drawings, and construction documentsDevelop process control descriptions for use by system integratorsPrepare and review cost estimates and participate in value analysisProject & Client Management
Lead project coordination meetings with internal teams, external consultants, contractors, vendors, and ownersParticipate in client requirement meetings and provide technical guidance throughout project executionDevelop and manage project scope, budget, staffing, schedules, and design approachOversee and manage multiple projects concurrentlyConstruction, Commissioning & QA / QC
Conduct constructability reviews and quality assurance / quality control reviews on own and peer projectsReview and approve contractor submittals and documentationPerform field reviews during construction and prepare construction review documentationParticipate in factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), startup, and commissioning activities, providing direction to commissioning teamBusiness Development
Contribute I&C scopes, control narratives, and cost estimates for water and wastewater proposalTranslate utility operational needs into practical SCADA, PLC, and instrumentation solutionsSupport client meetings and site assessments to identify control system modernization opportunitiesDevelop proposal and marketing content highlighting automation strategy and lifecycle valueRequired Qualifications :
Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering (Master’s degree preferred)Approximately 7-10 years of experience in Instrumentation & Controls design for water and wastewater facilitiesProfessional Engineer (PE or license, or ability to obtain reciprocity within a defined timeframeStrong working knowledge of applicable codes and standards (NEC, NFPA, and related standards)Experience developing P&IDs, specifications, control system architectures, and construction documentsAbility to convey I&C requirements clearly to project managers, clients, and multidisciplinary teamsStrong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skillsAbility to work on multiple projects simultaneouslyProficiency with AutoCAD or AutoCAD Plant 3D (or willingness to learn)Experience with PLC, SCADA, DCS and HMI configuration or programming preferredWhat We Offer :
