Alberta Health Services (AHS) is the largest acute care provider in Alberta and part of a fully integrated health system. Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton is a pediatric quaternary care hospital affiliated with the University of Alberta, supporting education, research, and specialized care. It is the only pediatric specialty hospital serving infants, children, and youth in central and northern Alberta. The Health Care Aide (HCA) is a regulated health care professional reporting to the Manager of the Pediatric Trauma & Surgery Unit. The unit has 29 beds (subject to change) and provides care to patients from birth to 18 years of age. Patient populations include trauma, emergency and scheduled surgical cases, and overflow from other pediatric programs. Under the direction of regulated health care professionals and in collaboration with patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members, the HCA works to full scope of practice. Responsibilities include providing personal care and assistance with activities of daily living, assisting with assessments and procedures, providing comfort measures, and documenting care in the electronic patient record. Other duties include portering, specimen transport, supply and inventory management, equipment cleaning, and maintaining a safe, organized unit environment. The successful applicant will be oriented and cross‑trained within the program and to other selected Stollery inpatient and ambulatory areas to support operational needs. Description:

As a Health Care Aide (HCA), you will work as a collaborative member of the multidisciplinary team, providing personal assistance by supporting activities of daily living and delivering support services to patients (clients, residents) who require short term assistance or ongoing support, in accordance with the patient care plan and facility policies and procedures. In this role, you will work closely with patients, families, and caregivers across the continuum of care in home, community, and health care facilities. You will assist nurses with the provision of routine care to meet patients' hygiene, nutrition, mobility, recreation, and safety needs; assist with organized activities or programs; and observe and report on patients' mood, health, and wellbeing. Working under the supervision of a regulated health professional, you will assist in maintaining a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors, while supporting effective communication with patients and health care professionals.

Active or eligible for registration or practice permit with the College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA) as a Health Care Aide, along with proof of education or completion of Health Care Aide Certificate within 18 months of hire.

Basic Cardiac Life Support- Health Care Provider (BCLS- HCP) certification must be current (annual recertification required) and recognized by the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Committed to family-centered care and a desire to work with children in an acute care environment is required. Good communication, time management and organizational skills are required. Preference will be given to candidates with recent acute care experience in pediatrics. Preference will be given to candidates with previous childcare experience and/or education. Physical requirements include long periods of standing, walking, and includes crouching, lifting up to 50lbs, patient transfers, and the ability to reach over the shoulder. Work occurs in a fast-paced environment. The role requires provision of constant care.
