https : / / www.vsb.bc.ca / . Settlement Workers in Schools The Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) program facilitates the settlement and integration of newly arrived families.

Through needs assessments of and systematic outreach to newcomer families, Settlement Workers will provide cross-cultural education, information about schools and schooling, and information about and referrals to community agencies and support programs.

Settlement Workers will work with secondary students and families, families of elementary students, and, in some cases, may work directly with elementary students.

In this role you will : Provide systematic settlement needs assessments and action planning for newcomer families Inform and orient students and families about settlement-related issues and assists clients, to prioritize settlement needs Provide referrals to various community services / agencies as appropriate and conduct outreach activities Develop and distribute culturally appropriate information and material Orient school staff on settlement-related issues Assist school staff with establishing and maintaining contact with hard to reach families Organize and / or facilitate settlement-related events and workshops Encourage parent participation in education & community Link newcomer families to resources and services in school and the community, and promote culturally sensitive links between school staff and newcomer families Enable newcomer families to advocate for the educational needs of their children Maintain up-to-date files and statistical information and ensure the confidentiality of client information, and submit statistical information as required Performs School & Student to the division Perform other work within the job band as assigned Qualifications : Completion of grade 12 plus 2 years of full-time year equivalent post-secondary education and / or a diploma in any of the following areas : Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Child and Youth Care or Education Minimum of 2 years related experience, preferably in a community agency environment Thorough knowledge of immigration and refugee issues, as well as government-related policies and community resources available to new Canadians Sound knowledge of cultural awareness and integration issues to facilitate cultural bridging to new Canadians Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse individuals and cultures, school staff, students, families, and community agencies Familiarity with the process of family needs assessments Ability to work independently as well as part of a multi-disciplinary team under minimum supervision Knowledge of educational settings is an asset Fluency in Korean is required Some activities may require you to work irregular hours and / or work on the occasional weekend Your application must include : Cover letter Resume Contact information for three professional references from direct supervisors This posting is ongoing until filled.
