Student, Field Inspector – Hybrid
The Opportunity
The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is seeking a Summer Student to join the Field Operations East team within the Regulatory Compliance (RC) Branch. Inspectors at the AER function as the organization’s eyes and ears in the field, carrying out proactive inspections across multiple regulatory disciplines, responding to incidents and stakeholder concerns, delivering industry education on-site, and providing field-level intelligence to support branch and enterprise-wide functions.
In the role of Student Inspector, you will be responsible for conducting inspections of oil and gas wellsites, facilities, and specified enactment activities. Additional duties include responding to spills, assisting with incident investigations, and addressing public complaints to ensure adherence to AER legislation, rules, and requirements.
What your day-to-day will look like :
Independently conduct inspections of operations and activities under AER jurisdiction , including planning, sampling (as required ), analyzing information, preparing reports and correspondence, and recommending or initiating follow-up or enforcement actions.
Support planning and reporting activities in accordance with AER policies, procedures, the Compliance Assurance Program, and the Branch Operational Plan; collaborate with team members to achieve program objectives .
Respond to incidents and stakeholder complaints , and support resolution efforts among AER stakeholders.
Communicate with and provide guidance to industry regarding compliance concerns.
R epresent the AER in the field by adhering to all safety procedures, including site hazard assessments, PPE protocols, equipment testing, safe driving practices, and lone-worker best practices.
Contribute to provincial initiatives and assignments related to operational, regulatory, and technical needs.
What we’re looking for in you :
Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program in E ngineering, E nvironmental S ciences or a related field .
Ability to work independently and lead inspection activities.
Strong communication and organizational skills.
Strong analytical skills with the ability to make independent decisions and exercise sound judgment.
Additional Information :
Proof of enrollment in a registered post-secondary institution including enrollment in the semester following the work term, or enrollment in a registered co-op program will be a condition of hire.

A pre-placement medical and a fully valid Class 5 driver’s license, along with a positive driving record, are required due to the field component of this role. Applicants must be willing to complete First Aid, Driver Training, and H2S Alive training (provided as part of duties).
This role involves approximately 50 % field work; therefore, travel within Alberta and occasional overnight trips will be required .
All applicants must have physical ability to conduct typical Oil & Gas field work, including driving prolonged distances, climbing stairs, ladders, etc., walking around industrial sites, walking into remote locations where necessary, and ability to work in all weather conditions.
