Summary
The Student Planner, Transportation will support ongoing transportation studies, coordinate active transportation initiatives and events, conduct traffic and transportation data collection and analysis, perform research, and handle other administrative tasks. The role reports to the Project Manager of Transportation and assists in the day‑to‑day needs of the Transportation business unit within the Engineering Department.
Duties
- Assist with active transportation educational and promotional programs and initiatives such as Markham Cycling Day, Markham Cycles Bike Hub, Active School Travel, and other outreach events.
- Assist in event planning, set‑up, program evaluation, grant and award applications, background research, and other activities promoting active transportation in Markham.
- Prepare city‑initiated public engagement materials and support stakeholder engagement activities on transportation projects.
- Conduct site visits and field observations to support project assessment and data collection.
- Perform internet research and literature reviews on transportation planning or traffic engineering topics, preparing summaries and presentations as required.
- Support ongoing transportation studies / projects such as the Transportation Master Plan, Secondary Plans, and Environmental Assessments.
- Attend meetings and prepare meeting minutes.
- Assist with day‑to‑day administrative duties, including digitizing engineering reports and reference materials.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Currently enrolled in a post‑secondary institution in Environmental Studies, Civil Engineering, Urban Planning, or a related field of study.Strong interest in transportation planning, traffic engineering, and sustainable urban mobility.Understand the basic rules of the road for traffic, bicycles, and pedestrians.Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Teams, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Knowledge of graphic design software such as Adobe Photoshop or InDesign is an asset.Ability to work concurrently on multiple projects / assignments and meet deadlines independently and collaboratively.Self‑motivated with excellent communication, interpersonal, customer service, data entry, and organizational skills.Ability to bicycle comfortably on lower‑speed roads and / or have formal cycling training is an asset.Duration and Hours
Summer term, typically from May – August 2026.Monday to Friday, 8 : 30 am to 4 : 30 pm, 35 hours per week (excluding holidays).Location
