Role Overview

Smithers Toyota is seeking an experienced Accounting Manager to serve as the in‑house lead for daily accounting operations. This role is responsible for the accuracy, consistency, and integrity of store‑level accounting while working closely with both the central Controller and the General Manager.

The Accounting Manager plays a proactive role in identifying financial alerts, anomalies, and trends, supporting leadership in addressing issues early and making informed operational decisions.

This is a structured role with defined support, including oversight from a central accounting team and an in‑house Accounts Payable Assistant.

Key Responsibilities

Daily and Weekly Accounting Operations

Lead daily accounting processes for Smithers Toyota

Ensure accurate and timely posting in the dealer management system

Review and reconcile general ledger, bank, and trust accounts

Maintain strong internal controls and documentation standards

Month‑End and Reporting

Lead month‑end close at the store level

Prepare reconciliations, schedules, and supporting documentation

Collaborate with the Controller on financial statements, adjustments, and compliance

Identify variances and trends proactively

Leadership and Oversight

Provide day‑to‑day support and direction to the Accounts Payable Assistant

Act as the escalation point for accounting‑related questions at the store level

Alerts, Anomalies, and Leadership Support

Work closely with the General Manager to flag financial anomalies, risks, and unusual trends

Communicate issues clearly with context and recommended next steps

Communication and Collaboration

Serve as the primary accounting contact for Smithers Toyota leadership

Communicate effectively with non‑accounting managers

Partner with the central accounting team on process improvement and standardization

What This Role Is — and Is Not

This role is :

The senior accounting lead on‑site

A leadership role with structure and support

Focused on consistency, accuracy, and proactive insight

This role is not :

A standalone Controller or Comptroller role

Responsible for group‑level tax planning

A high‑stress role requiring excessive hours

Qualifications and Experience

Proven accounting experience in a professional environment

Experience leading or supporting junior accounting staff

Strong understanding of accounting fundamentals and internal controls

Ability to identify and communicate financial issues clearly and calmly

Dealership accounting experience is an asset but not required

Certified Professional Accountant designation is an asset but not required.
