Bigstone Education Cree Nation Education Authority seeks a dynamic and culturally responsive Math teacher to inspire and guide our high school students in developing solid mathematical reasoning, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of the Alberta Math curriculum, a commitment to incorporating Indigenous perspectives and knowledge systems in their teaching approach, and a passion for creating a positive and inclusive learning environment.
Key Responsibilities : Curriculum Delivery : Plan and deliver comprehensive instruction aligned with the Alberta Math curriculum, integrating Indigenous perspectives, examples, and culturally relevant applications of mathematical concepts.
Diverse Mathematical Perspectives : Explore and value the diverse mathematical knowledge systems and problem-solving approaches within Indigenous cultures and those in Western mathematics tradition.
Connecting Math to Indigenous Cultures : Recognize the universality of mathematics while honouring diverse problem-solving strategies, representations, and applications of mathematical concepts found in Indigenous cultures.
Differentiated Instruction : Employ diverse instructional strategies to cater to various learning styles, abilities, and cultural backgrounds.
Implement adaptations and supports to ensure accessibility for all students, recognizing the unique needs of Indigenous learners.
Assessment and Evaluation : Develop and administer formative and summative assessments (e.g., projects, presentations, problem sets, tests, quizzes) to measure student progress and provide constructive feedback.
Consider alternative assessment methods that align with Indigenous ways of knowing and demonstrating understanding. Classroom Management : Establish a safe, respectful, and productive learning environment by setting clear expectations, promoting positive student behaviour, and implementing effective classroom management techniques that reflect Indigenous cultural values and practices.
Mentorship and Guidance : Provide guidance and support for students' academic, personal, and social development, potentially collaborating with Elders and Knowledge Keepers.
Collaboration : Work collaboratively with colleagues, parents / guardians, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and support staff to enhance student learning outcomes and well-being.
Professional Development : Actively participate in professional development opportunities to improve teaching practice and stay current with evolving educational approaches for Indigenous learners.
Qualifications : Bachelor's Degree in Education specializing in Mathematics or a related field. Valid Alberta Teaching Certificate.
Demonstrated knowledge of the Alberta Math curriculum. Experience teaching high school Math courses. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Strong problem-solving and organizational abilities. Ability to motivate, engage, and inspire diverse learners. Commitment to inclusion, equity, and creating a culturally responsive classroom environment.
Additional Desired Skills : Experience in integrating technology for innovative teaching and learning. Familiarity with assessment for learning principles and practices.
Knowledge of adolescent development and psychology. Experience working in Indigenous communities or a demonstrated understanding of Indigenous cultures, histories, and perspectives, including Indigenous approaches to mathematics.
