The University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) is the second-largest division of the University of Toronto, Canada’s preeminent research institution.

Since 2014, the LGBQT Oral History Digital Collaboratory is a training ground for undergraduate and graduate students and an active research project that collects, preserves gay, queer, and trans life stories, using new methodologies in digital history, collaborative research, and archival practice.

The research has been funded by SSHRC Insight Grants since 2014 and has included numerous collaborators and archival partners in the US and Canada over the last 10 years.

As principal investigator (PI), Professor Elspeth Brown invites applications for the position of a Research Associate to take on a leadership role in managing this highly interdisciplinary research environment.

Under the guidance of Professor Brown, the incumbent will be primarily responsible for pushing forward the research vision of the SSHRC-funded LGBQT Oral History Digital Collaboratory Project (2020-2025).

The LGBQT Oral History Digital Collaboratory Project is a public history initiative that uses emerging strategies in digital research creation to reach broader publics about the queer and trans past.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in LGBQT history of the US and Canada; in oral history praxis; in data management and ethical data protocols;

in digital media creation; and in digital media communication. They will have substantial experience in facilitating collaborations among researchers as well as in supervising work-study students.

The incumbent will be based in the Department of Historical Studies at UTM. They will report directly to Professor Elspeth Brown.

They will work with the project’s PI, collaborators, consultants and Research Assistants to set future directions, build local and global collaborations and networks, and manage a range of individual projects effectively.

The successful candidate will work independently to :

Manage the research operations of the LGBQT Oral History Digital Collaboratory ( Collab ).

Coordinate the planning, scheduling, and monitoring the collaborative work for the Collab.

Create original digital media drawing from our oral history interviews, including video shorts, audiograms, Instagram stories.

Supervise work study students in the creation of social media animations of the archive

Engage in primary research relating to our next project, the history of drag kings.

Collaborate in the writing of scholarly articles as a named author.

Program public events

Maintain connections with oral history narrators

Draft and co-present research presentations relating to our work

Prepare relevant funding applications and project reports

Support staff, research assistants and students as required

Maintain project records

The incumbent will be expected to perform research with a high degree of independence, and will design, direct, execute, analyse and present in written and oral forms novel investigative studies that build and draw on the incumbent’s academic experience.

EDUCATION :

MA. in a relevant area of sexuality and / or gender studies.

EXPERIENCE :

At least three (3) years of demonstrated expertise in academic research, with expertise in LGBQT history and culture.

Experience as a project / team lead required.

Experience supervising small, interdisciplinary teams of individuals in a university environment

Experience in providing project management support.

OTHER :

  • Superior communication and organizational skills;
  • Superior graphic design and video / audio editing skills;
  • Self-motivated with an ability to multi-task;
  • Ability to work in a collaborative group;
  • Ability to lead a project and co-ordinate research teams;
  • Supervisory skills including effective teambuilding and the ability to establish positive working relationships and foster collaboration to achieve common goals;
  • Experience in training and monitoring performance;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills;
  • Strong organizational, decision-making and resourcefulness, judgement and diplomacy

This a term position at 50% FTE until June 2025
