Prof. Oleksandr Voznyy, in the Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences at the University of Toronto Scarborough, invites applicants for the position of Research Associate (Limited Term) to conduct research on Ni-based cathode materials for Li-ion batteries.
This opportunity of a Research Associate (Limited Term) is a 1-year appointment and the anticipated start date is July 15, 2024.
Job Duties :
This position focuses on industrially relevant NMC cathodes and seeks to improve them for long-term stability under high-voltage operation. The candidate will :
- Synthesize new inorganic cathode materials using various methods (hydrothermal, polyol, sol-gel, co-precipitation, microwave),
- Characterize the obtained materials using various analytical and electrochemical techniques (XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, etc.).
- Assemble and test coin cell and pouch batteries, including electrolyte and cathode formulations, cyclic voltammetry, and impedance spectroscopy,
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to develop new synthetic schemes and material compositions for next-generation Li-ion batteries.
- Participate in the preparation of research presentations; grant applications; writing of research papers and reports;
- Supervise research of students and other trainees.
At all times, the individual is expected to support the overall research and teaching missions of Prof. Voznyy’s research group.
Qualifications (Minimum Qualifications) :
- Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field, preferably with a focus on battery materials.
- A least 4 years of postdoctoral or research scientist / research associate experience in either academic or industrial setting
- Demonstrated experience with Li-ion batteries manufacturing, research and development with emphasis on cathodes, including material synthesis, coatings, and characterization, knowledge of battery operation and testing, understanding of ion transport mechanisms and cathode-electrolyte interactions.
Industrial experience is a plus.
- Strong background in inorganic chemistry, electrochemistry, and expertise with a various materials characterization technique, including SEM, TEM, XPS, XRD, ICP, Raman Spectroscopy, Auger, and others.
- More than 5 years of experience with battery fabrication, nanomaterials synthesis and various coating methods.
- Experience with electrolyte formulations, and battery cell assembly in a lab or manufacturing environment, using battery assembly tools, gloveboxes, battery testing analytic equipment, such as multi-channel potentiostats, battery cyclers, EIS, other electrochemical testing methods.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and independently on research projects.
Travel :
Limited travelling will be required. The Research Associate will have the opportunity to present research at academic conferences.
Notes :
This is a 1-year appointment, with the possibility of extension, depending on approval of
supervisor based on performance and funding.
Pay Scale Group & Hiring Zone : R01 Research Associates (Limited Term) : $51,543 -$96,643 annually.
Effective July 1st, 2024 : Pay Scale Group & Hiring Zone : R01 Research Associates (Limited Term) : $52,574 -$98,576 annually.
Starting Annual Salary Hiring Range : $52,574 - $60,000.
