Position Overview
The Survey Assistant supports survey and layout operations on construction and earthworks projects. This role works under the direction of the Survey Technician or Project Supervisor to assist with GPS setup, site layout, grade checking, and data collection to ensure projects are built accurately, efficiently, and safely.
When survey-related tasks are complete or limited, the Survey Assistant is expected to support general field operations, assisting crews with labor and equipment support as needed. This is a hands‑on, team‑oriented role suited to individuals who are adaptable and willing to contribute wherever required to keep projects moving.
This is an entry‑to‑intermediate role with growth potential into a Survey Technician and Survey Lead
Survey & Layout Support
- Assist with site layout, staking, and grade checks using GPS and total station equipment
- Support machine control operations (Trimble and / or Leica), including setup, calibration, and basic troubleshooting
- Collect, verify, and record survey data and field measurements
- Assist with uploading and verifying GPS files on equipment as directed
- Perform quality checks on grades, slopes, and alignments during construction
- Maintain and care for survey equipment, GPS units, and accessories
Field Operations Support
Assist field crews with general labor tasks when survey work is not requiredSupport operations such as :
Running plate packers, rollers, and compactorsMaterial handling and site cleanupSpotting and assisting equipment operatorsSupporting grade crews and pipe crews as directedFollow direction from site supervisors to assist where operational needs requireGeneral
Communicate effectively with operators, supervisors, and survey staff regarding layout, corrections, and site needsFollow all company safety procedures, FLHAs, and site‑specific safety requirementsMaintain a strong safety mindset while working around heavy equipment and active worksitesQualifications & Experience
Previous construction, earthworks, or survey experience considered an assetComfortable performing manual labor in addition to technical survey tasksFamiliarity with GPS equipment (Trimble or Leica preferred, but not required)Ability to read and understand site drawings, grades, and basic plansWillingness to learn survey methods, machine control, and layout proceduresPhysically capable of working outdoors in varying weather conditionsAbility to work alone or within a teamStrong attention to detail and accuracyPositive attitude and ability to work as part of a teamSafety & Certifications (assets, not mandatory)
