The Director of Care (DOC) leads, plans, organizes, guides, and oversees the activities of the Clinical Team to meet the unique and individual needs of our residents and enhance their quality of life.

The Director of Care is an integral member of the inter-professional management team and is accountable for nursing and personal care that supports the delivery and provision of resident centered care.

Through strong leadership, role modelling, collaboration, and best practice processes, the DOC will ensure and achieve best resident outcomes.

The Director of Care would be accountable for the following :

  • Ensures that thesafety and privacy of residents is maintained in a homelike environment andthat services are provided in a manner that empowers residents as partners incare and is supportive of families and the essential role they play.
  • Participates in theMultidisciplinary Leadership Team that collaborates to ensure high qualityprograms, services and care.
  • Is a strong rolemodel whose actions align with the mission, vision and values of theorganization.
  • Ensures theprovision of quality resident care through the delegation of appropriatefunctions to the clinical manager(s) and Associate Director of Care.
  • Ensures thateffective management systems, including reporting and internal structures, aremaintained and compliant with all applicable legislation and all SJLCBstandards, policies, and procedures.
  • Provides for the allocation, optimum use, and evaluation of resources.
  • Manages and monitorsfunding to establish and build on an effective model of care.
  • Ensures theappropriate delegation of duties, responsibilities, and accountability of all regulatedand personal support care staff.
  • Oversees thedevelopment and maintenance of policies and procedures which reflect thephilosophy, values, goals, and objectives of the organization.
  • Coordinates anefficient multidisciplinary system of admission, transfers, and discharges.
  • Ensures thatservices procured from external sources meets the required standards of safetyand quality.
  • Oversees themaintenance of effective documentation systems and procedures.
  • Leads theimplementation of clinical quality improvement and risk management strategiesand initiatives.
  • Facilitateseffective and supportive relationships with representatives of the Ministry ofHealth and Long-Term Care, LHIN, OHT, Home and community Care and otherexternal agencies and organizations.
  • Participates inlabour relations, negotiations and grievance meetings as required.
  • Promotes theadvancement of nursing knowledge and the utilization of research data.
  • Key contact forresident physicians and ministry representatives.
  • Participates and / orlead committees (e.g., HPAC, QMEC, pharmacy, program planning, transitionalcare)
  • Performs all dutiesin accordance with the legislation, the Standards of Practice of the College ofNurses of Ontario, the mission, vision, and values of St.

Joseph’s LifecareCentre Brantford.

  • Assists with theinterpretation of policies and established standards as set out by relevant andpertinent legislative and regulatory bodies (CNO, MOHLTC, Health and SafetyAct, etc.)
  • Working collaboratively with the HR andclinical leadership team, responsible for interviewing, hiring, and performancedevelopment for all clinical employees.
  • Participates as part of the Leadership Teamand assumes on-call as part of a rotation with other members of the team.
  • Other duties asassigned by the Administrator or their delegate.

This position may be required to perform additional related job functions beyond this description.

To perform this jobsuccessfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty. The requirements listed below arerepresentative of the knowledge, skill, and / or ability required.

  • A Baccalaureate degree in Nursing (Master’s degree preferred)
  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse and a current certificate of competence with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • 5+ years nursing supervisory experience (LTC experience preferred)
  • Comprehensive knowledge of standards set out by the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Long-Term Care and College of Nurses
  • Strong leadership and team building skills
  • Strong computer skills, including but not limited to Point Click Care, online learning platforms and Microsoft Office
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; able to prepare policies and procedures and communicate regarding best practices
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and performance manage staff providing various levels of nursing and resident centred care
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and demonstrate sound decision making, time management, and administrative skills
  • Self-motivated, results focused and able to follow through on initiatives effectively and efficiently
  • Ability to prioritize and work efficiently and accurately to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills, patience, and oral and written communication skills to effectively communicate with residents, the public, staff, and external service providers.
  • Capacity to create an environment conducive to the well-being of residents and staff
