Duties

What does a legal translator do? The candidates selected will translate and revise, from English into French, a variety of legal documents from various federal departments and agencies, for example :

Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada

The Courts Administration Service

Transport Canada

The Translation Bureau is seeking to fill legal translator positions to translate documents in the following fields (non-exhaustive list) : commercial law, copyright, administrative law, constitutional law, criminal law, Aboriginal rights, family law, tax law, civil law, maritime law, labour law, national and international agreements, and contract law.

Translation Bureau

Established in , the Translation Bureau is a special operating agency of Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC). It supports the Government of Canada in its efforts to communicate with and serve Canadians in its two official languages, Indigenous languages, foreign languages as well as sign languages.

It offers translation, revision, editing, terminology, language advice, closed captioning, and interpretation services to federal departments and agencies and Parliament.

The Translation Bureau also provides online tools and resources to Canadians through the Language Portal of Canada.

The Translation Bureau is the center of excellence in linguistic services for the Government of Canada. It also plays a leadership role in the various spheres of federal government activities and increasingly stands out in the Canadian languages industry as a leader in language technologies due to its innovative culture.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Do you have what it takes?

EDUCATION

Do you have a bachelors or masters degree in translation (from English to French) from a recognized postsecondary institution?

A degree in the legal field and a specialization* in translation from English to French from a recognized postsecondary institution?

The specialization in translation may have been obtained through one or more certificates consisting of a total of 30 credits in language transfer and 15 credits in related courses or through a graduate diploma in legal translation.

EXPERIENCE

Do you have at least two years of full-time experience in English-to-French legal translation?

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

We would like to know more about you. Do you have any assets that are not essential to the position of legal translator but that may help you to stand out?

Do you have a law degree or a legal certificate, or have you studied law?

Are you a member of a professional association of translators in Canada?

Do you have any experience translating legal documents for the Government of Canada?

Conditions of employment

Various security requirements : Security clearance at the Reliability, Secret or Top Secret levels. The security clearance is not a factor at the screening stage.

Translation services are provided 24 hours a day, seven days a week, days a year. Some people may therefore be required to work on a rotational basis during the day, evening or night, including weekends.

A work schedule that does not correspond with the normal work week or other special work arrangements may also be necessary.

If you receive an "Application Rejected at Screening" message immediately after submitting your application, you likely answered "No" to the screening question assessing the essential education qualification.

If you incorrectly indicated "No" for this qualification, simply retrieve your application and update your answer to the screening question.

What does "Listed in the Directory" mean?

When your application has been successfully submitted to the inventory, your status may be, "Results Release Date : Enrolled in Inventory.

This automatically generated message means that your application can be considered. You will be notified in the event that your application is considered in a process from this inventory.

What happens if my employment application expires?

Your application will be held in the directory for days. A notice will be posted to the "My Jobs File" menu in your account 20 days prior to the expiration of your application.

If you ignore this notice, your application will be deactivated and you will no longer be considered for referrals from this inventory.

Should your application expire during the term of this inventory, a notice will be posted in your account. If you wish to confirm your interest and reactivate your application, select the "Renew My Application" link.

Preference
