Child & Youth Worker

Full Time, Temporary : 8 weeks (Canada Summer Jobs)

We're looking for a mission-driven Child & Youth Worker who is passionate about creating more accessible, inclusive, and equitable communities across Canada where people with low vision have unlimited opportunities and can experience life free from barriers and discrimination.

Your Impact at CNIB

  • Research and arrange activities with community partners / organizations, recreational groups, and guest speakers.
  • Supervise program participants during recreational activities and program outings.
  • Assist with administrative tasks including parent / participant correspondence and attendance records.
  • Ensure participants have all necessary materials in preferred accessible formats.
  • Assist in the recruitment of volunteers for summer camps and coordinate volunteer orientation sessions as well as required training and materials.
  • Arrange and accompany participants on community day trips.
  • Provide scheduled guests and speakers with Zoom links and relevant instructions and technical supports.
  • Demonstrate assistive technology, including Voiceover and various apps for iPhone and iPad (instruction is provided).

Requirements

Who you are :

Education and Certifications

Degree or diploma in related field such as social services, disability studies child & youth studies, communications, health studies, etc.

or equivalent work experience.

University or college student preferred.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Experience working with the general public.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Good technology and computer skills, including working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook and Zoom.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal and diplomacy skills.
  • Demonstrates mature and sensitive nature when dealing with the needs of persons experiencing sight loss.
  • Knowledge of not-for-profit community resources is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of technical aids and devices for people with vision loss is an asset.
  • Must be reliable, mature, and responsible.
  • Must be able to work independently and as a team player.
  • Must be able to travel independently within the region via public transit or car (taxi, Uber etc.).
  • Knowledge of built-in accessibility features on smartphones preferred.
  • Familiarity with iOS and android based smartphones preferred.
  • Experience assisting people who are blind or low vision with smartphone use is an asset.
  • Personal or professional experience relating to blindness and sight loss is considered an asset.
  • Personal or professional experience working with assistive technology and / or accessible environments is considered an asset.

Eligibility

This position is funded through Canada Summer Jobs. To be eligible to participate in the Canada Summer Jobs initiative, individuals must :

  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment.
  • Be a Canadian citizens, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

International students are not eligible participants. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
