The Indigenous Summer Student Program provides Indigenous students with invaluable work experience in a welcoming, culturally safe, and inclusive environment.

Description :

The Summer Student is responsible for providing general support to the HSEQ team and Stakeholders at Jansen Discovery Lodge.

Responsibilities :

Support HSEQ team with

  • Routine Audits and Inspections, including Food Safety Inspections, Room Audit Inspections, General Area Inspections, Formal and Informal Worksite Inspections.
  • New Worker Orientations, Green Hand Program and Biz -Trainer. Work with team towards % completion of required workers training.
  • Auditing and engagement of workers at toolbox meetings, pre task meetings, safety meetings, chemical and environment inspections and meetings.
  • Incident Investigations and required reporting.
  • Near Miss, Hazard Identification and Behavior Based Observations. Conduct the activities daily as well as support required workers training.
  • Safety Boards, Auditing PPE, Audit Equipment and Tools, Auditing Fit For Duty, Auditing FLHAs, Auditing JSA / SOP Reviews- alongside Business Units.
  • Development of Safety Sunday Topics and PPT in liaison with Operations teams. Present at a Safety Sunday Meeting.
  • Development and review of JSAs, SOPs and SWPs in liaison with Operations teams. Work to keep all SMS Documents uploaded, current and secure in SharePoint.
  • Emergency Management in liaison with Business Unit team. Work with teams on ERP training, ERP Exercises, Muster Point Training and Exercises,
  • Support all types of HSEQ reporting, document control and change management.

Work with HSEQ to learn, use and advise Business Partners on

  • OHS Law and the requirements found in OHS ACT, REGULATION and CODE.
  • Requirements and tools of the Safety Management System.
  • Work with HSEQ team and Business Unit Partners to develop, participate in and document JHSC Meetings. Attending meetings, taking notes, writing reports and minutes and distributing and filing documents.

Qualifications :

  • Minimum site requirements (CSTS, First Aid, WHMIS).
  • Orientation upon arrival at site.
  • Obtain Food Safety Course prior to or after arrival at site.
  • Meet all site access requirement (BHP and WFS).

Prerequisites :

  • This position is intended for student taking OHS and or NCSO training, or
  • Any Student with an interest in the practical application of Occupational Health and Safety.

Skills :

  • Computer literacy with WORD, EXCEL, OUT LOOK, PPT
  • Mobility and able to work inside and outside.
  • Able to work with Advisors, Supervisors and Workers
  • Ability to participate and present in meetings.
  • Ability to learn, teach and mentor Workers and Supervisors.

Where We Work and Live :

The Jansen Discovery Lodge is a workforce housing facility in support of the BHP Jansen potash mine. The camp is located kilometers east of Saskatoon, SK.

  • An Indigenous student (First Nations, Inuit, or Métis)
  • Starting or returning to a full-time post-secondary and / or trades program in September
  • Committed to working for months from May to August on a full-time basis
  • Able to provide a resume and proof of post-secondary enrollment
