Laboratory Services is a comprehensive program that provides 2.2 million tests per annum in support of all RVH clinical programs and clinical trials.
RVH Laboratory Services is an Accredited services as recognized by Institute for Quality Management in Healthcare (IQMH) and have received and maintained ISO15189 Accreditation Plus designation.
As a qualified candidate you will have the following job requirements :
- General certification in Medical Laboratory Technology from a recognized post-secondary institute
- Certification through the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS)
- Registration with the College of Medical laboratory Technologist of Ontario (CMLTO) in areas of responsibility required
- Current registration with the College of Medical laboratory Technologist (CMLTO) in areas of responsibility required
- Participation in professional committees, networks recommended
- Minimum one (1) year recent laboratory experience in related discipline(s), as required by assigned area, preferred
- General knowledge of all areas of the laboratory preferred
- General knowledge of the theory and practices of applicable laboratories procedures and equipment required
- Meditech and LIS knowledge and experience an asset
- Experience with current instrumentation / automation in respective area an asset
- Demonstrated ability to develop skill and knowledge in required areas of the laboratory required.
Qualifications :
- CSMLS registration in Cytopathology
- Currently licensed in good standing by CMLTO to practice as a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) in the province of Ontario in Histology
- Evidence of competency with respect to Cytology as per CMLTO guidelines;
- Knowledge of Quality Control Programs and equipment maintenance required
Experience
- Cytology- minimum 1 year experience
- Histology- experience is an asset
Position Summary :
The Cytotechnologist / Histology MLT reports to the Laboratory Manager or designate and is responsible and accountable for laboratory testing performed according to established laboratory protocols.
The candidate will be scheduled in Cytology and Histology. The Cytotechnologist / Histology MLT will demonstrate aptitude in the Cytology discipline according to theory, technique, skill in performing procedures, knowledge of those procedures and the implications of Quality Control and Quality Assurance.
The Cytotechnologist / Histology MLT is responsible for delivery of care consistent with the vision and values of the hospital and the standards of relevant professional organizations.
The incumbent must comply with the Occupational Health and Safety standards for the hospital and is proactive in promoting a safe work environment.
Responsibilities :
- Performing laboratory procedures for histology functions and grossing, microtomy, embedding, staining and ensuring the completion of assigned workload
- Performs all basic clinical Laboratory procedures, including : selecting particles, concentrating, and filtering, smearing, mounting, staining, cover slipping, all within defined limits of accuracy.
- Screens each cytology slide and records all findings for review by Pathologist.
- Operating, troubleshooting, maintenance and cleanliness of laboratory equipment and work area
- Participating in teaching, educational, safety and quality improvement programs
- Observing and understanding hospital and departmental policies and procedures
- Adhering to hospital and departmental mission and vision statements while maintaining patient confidentiality
- Maintaining patient confidentiality
- Adhering to the Ontario Laboratory Accreditation (OLA) requirements
- Performing cross-functional duties, as assigned or requested
- Performing other duties related to and consistent with the job classification, as required.
- Performs all procedures using Standard Precautions
- Collate statistical information pertinent to the area of responsibility
- Maintains up-to-date cytology technical procedure manual in compliance with IQMH guidelines
- Assists in the instruction of students and new employees
- Performs other assigned duties within the laboratory to the extent allowed by pertinent legislation of regulatory bodies
- Records, reviews and reports test results accurately and in a timely manner
