The Bigstone Cree Nation Education Authority serves the members of the Bigstone Cree Nation in Wabasca, with a total student population of approximately 500+ students.

We seek a knowledgeable and passionate Land-Based Teacher with a strong background in Cree (Sakâw) traditions, language, and ways of knowing.

The ideal candidate will ignite a love for the land within our high school students, facilitating outdoor learning, cultural experiences, and deep connections to Indigenous knowledge systems.

Key Responsibilities Land-Based Curriculum : Design and implement engaging land-based lessons grounded in Cree (Sakâw) teachings, ecological knowledge, and traditional skills.

Collaborate with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community members for guidance and authenticity. Experiential Learning : Facilitate hands-on activities like plant and animal identification, medicine walks, trapping, hunting techniques (if relevant), hide tanning, traditional crafts, and storytelling while emphasizing stewardship and respect for the land.

Cree Language Integration : Incorporate Cree (Sakâw) vocabulary, terminology, and place names to connect students to language revitalization efforts and deepen their understanding of the land.

Cultural Connections : Foster connections between land-based learning, Cree (Sakâw) worldviews, stories, ceremonies, and contemporary ways of life.

Student Well-being : Create a safe and inclusive learning environment that supports students' connection to the land, promoting holistic well-being, identity formation, and cultural pride.

Mentorship : Guide and mentor students outdoors and in the classroom, providing support as they develop practical skills and deepen their cultural understandings.

Safety and Risk Management : Prioritize student safety during land-based activities, ensuring proper risk assessments, protocols, and first-aid knowledge.

Maintain up-to-date First Aid and CPR certifications. Collaboration : Work closely with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, teachers, parents / guardians, and community members to enhance program success and cultural authenticity.

Professional Growth : Actively participate in professional development opportunities related to land-based education, Indigenous pedagogy, and Cree (Sakâw) culture and language.

Qualifications : Strong connection to and demonstrated knowledge of Cree (Sakâw) culture, language, traditions, and protocols.

Experience as a Knowledge Keeper, cultural educator, or practitioner of land-based skills would be a significant asset. Valid Alberta Teaching Certificate (preferred but optional, depending on experience).

Deep understanding of Indigenous pedagogies and experiential learning approaches. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in outdoor settings. Wilderness First Aid certification or equivalent.

Additional Desired Skills : Fluency in the Cree (Sakâw) language. Experience working with youth in outdoor education or cultural revitalization settings.

Knowledge of adolescent development and psychology. Understanding of local ecosystems, flora, and fauna. Why Work With Us?
