As our new Aquatic Ecologist , you will play an important role on a team whose work is essential to achieving this goal.

Job Description Working closely with senior team members, you’ll prepare health and safety plans, provide input on sampling designs, coordinate field events, conduct the full scope of aquatic field work programs (including fish and fish habitat assessments, benthic invertebrate sampling, surface water quality / quantity), data management and analysis, and technical report preparation.

You’ll also take on mentorship and leadership responsibilities with other SLR team members.

We’ll look to you to bring in-depth knowledge and interest in aquatic ecology, with strengths in baseline and impact assessments within provincial and federal regulatory frameworks.

Key Responsibilities You will also :

  • Collect and synthesize scientific literature, existing data sets and secondary source material for technical reports, proposals, and meetings
  • Lead the execution of field programs
  • Analyze and interpret data, and prepare aquatic technical reports
  • Identify potential impacts to aquatic ecosystems resulting from land use changes, and recommend suitable mitigation to avoid and / or reduce potential impacts
  • Assist in the development, management, and maintenance of complex technical projects involving client portfolios, schedules, budgets, and deliverables
  • Provide leadership, support, and training to junior staff
  • Provide technical expertise to other technical disciplines within SLR
  • Build and maintain good working relationships with subconsultants and contractors

Qualifications :

  • 4+ years of experience as an Ecologist / Biologist in the environmental consulting industry, with a specialization in aquatics
  • Registration as a Professional Biologist in BC (RPBio) and AB (P.Biol) are required
  • Degree (B.Sc.), in Biology, Ecology or Natural Sciences (M.Sc. is considered an asset)
  • Ability to work in the field, including remote locations valid driver’s license required
  • In-depth knowledge and experience with the scientific study, design, and implementation of aquatic field protocols
  • Experience in database management, statistical data analysis, and interpretation
  • Excellent research skills and experience with report writing
  • Experience navigating permitting and authorization processes related to Canadian federal, provincial, and regional legislation and policies
  • Field coordination and time management skills including planning and scheduling and the ability to produce deliverables on time
  • Backpack electrofishing certification required and CABIN considered an asset
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to interact with senior level staff, other technical disciplines and clients
