Job Summary
The AI Developer is responsible for supporting the need for innovation in service delivery for administrative units at UBC through the rapid prototyping, experimenting with, and validating of AI tools and services to explore their potential value for UBC based on identified business challenges. This role is focused on assessing AI technologies, testing small-scale AI solutions, and iterating based on feedback to determine feasibility before scaling the tools for broader adoption. The Sr. AI Developer will explore AI capabilities in a controlled, low-risk environment and identify opportunities for innovation. The successful candidate will work with a variety of AI and machine learning frameworks, including open-source libraries (e.g., Hugging Face, LangChain, spaCy), cloud AI platforms (e.g., AWS SageMaker, Amazon Bedrock, OpenAI, Azure AI), and other emerging tools. This role will involve designing proof-of-concept solutions, working with stakeholders to refine AI applications, and experimenting with new AI models and methodologies to assess their feasibility for UBC’s administrative and operational needs.
Organizational Status
The Digital Experience Lab (DxL) under the umbrella of UBC Office of the CIO (OCIO) has been established to help the IT organization safely experiment with artificial intelligence (AI) by testing and proving concepts with the intention to scale validated initiatives into future IT services. The goal is to explore AI capabilities through agile experimentation, shaping concepts before transforming them into enhanced services for the UBC community. The DxL is focused on incorporating AI and Machine Learning (ML) capabilities to address administrative challenges, improve operational efficiencies, and evaluate AI’s potential impact before scaling solutions to facilitate broader institutional adoption. This position reports to the Sr. Manager, Digital Experience and Creative Media and works in collaboration with management and staff across various portfolios within the Office of the CIO and IT service teams. The role involves close interaction with business stakeholders, and other organizational units across UBC to ensure AI solutions are usable, practical, and aligned with UBC’s strategic objectives.
