Work environment

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) is part of the core public service administration named in Schedule IV of the Financial Administration Act (FAA) and is also subject to the PSEA.

This being said the TSB is an independent arm's length agency that reports to Parliament through the President of the King's Privy Council for Canada.

The organization aspires to be a modern world-class organization that evolves and adapts as it strives to influence changes that advance transportation safety.

The TSB is a small organization with approximately 240 employees and 5 Board Members, including the Chair. The organization operates in a decentralized manner through 10 locations across Canada.

Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to establish a pool of partially qualified candidates. Similar positions may be staffed through this process with various tenures, language profiles and / or requirements, and security requirements.

Please note that the assessment tools and results of this pool will not be available to other departments until six months following the initial appointment.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Graduation with a degree from a recognized University in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering or some other engineering specialty relevant to the duties of the position.

Eligible for certification as a professional engineer in Canada.

Significant and recent experience conducting detailed engineering examinations and analysis and providing professional engineering expertise and opinions in the fields of electrical engineering, systems engineering or mechanical engineering related to the design and operation of maritme ships and vessels.

Experience leading or working in technical groups supporting accident investigations.

Experience writing authoritative professional engineering reports with respect to findings,analysis and technical issues

Significant is understood to mean the depth and breadth of experience normally associated with having performed a broad range of complex activities for at least 3 years.

Recent is understood to mean in the last 7 years

Bilingual - Imperative (BBB / BBB)

Knowledge of Transportation Safety Board of Canada and the Canadian Transportation Accident Investigation and Safety Board (CTAISB) Act.

Advanced knowledge of the theories and practices of ship systems, mechanical and / or electrical components.

Advanced knowledge of conducting detailed engineering examinations and safety assessments of

maritime vessels and / or other transportation vehicles.

Thorough knowledge of scientific, investigative and failure analysis methods and techniques in the transportation sector.

Ability to manage multiple projects to meet objectives and tight deadlines.

Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

Ability to communicate effectively verbally.

Ability to lead an investigation team.

Along with an engineering degree it would be beneficial to have a technology diploma or degree with specialization in maritime naval architecture / engineering.

Experience in conducting marine simulations or hull design.

Experience in other forms of transportation engineering would be considered an asset. This could be in any of the following modes : air, pipeline, rail or road.

Knowledge of marine / vessel simulations.

Possess a valid driver’s license in Canada.

Agree to deploy to accident sites where there may be exposure to difficult working conditions and to extreme climactic conditions.

Agree to respond and travel on short notice during and after normal working hours and on statutory holidays.

Agree to travel within Canada and abroad, including travel by car, rail, ship, and air.

Willingness to undergo TSB required training.
