Job description

POSITION TYPE PERMANENT, FULL-TIME (Mon – Fri, 8 : 30 a.m. – 4 : 30 p.m.)

Position Summary

The ROOTS Program supports adult Indigenous learners to strengthen their resilience, create new opportunities, and take ownership of their personal and academic journeys. Through individualized support, cultural connection, and transition planning, participants build stability, confidence, and readiness for success in education, training, or employment.

As a ROOTS Program Instructor, you play a pivotal role in guiding adult Indigenous learners through a journey of self-discovery, personal growth, and skill development. You deliver culturally relevant instruction using a variety of formats including lectures, workshops, hands-on activities and community engagement.

You provide instruction and individualized support to students in one-to-one settings, small groups, full classes, and structured courses, helping learners build resilience, confidence, wellness habits, interpersonal skills, and readiness for learning and work. Through the ROOTS Program, students develop self-awareness, self-esteem, a strong work ethic, and the skills needed to thrive in their personal and academic pursuits.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and facilitate engaging, culturally relevant self-development activities, workshops, and lessons that integrate Indigenous knowledge, perspectives, and practices.
  • Provide instructional support and coaching to individual students, small groups, classes, and courses, adapting approaches to learner needs and learning styles.

Facilitate discussions on : Self-esteem and confidence building

Emotional regulation and communication

Indigenous history and culture

Healthy living and wellness habits

  • Collaborate with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community members to enrich learning experiences.
  • Lead workshops that promote motivation, goal-setting, time-management, and ownership of learning.
  • Support learners in building resilience, personal empowerment, and transition readiness.
  • Provide guidance on study skills, test preparation, portfolios, and life-management strategies.
  • Assist students in creating personal portfolios to showcase accomplishments and growth.
  • Encourage and support community engagement and volunteer participation.
  • Track attendance, assess learner engagement, document progress, and provide constructive feedback.
  • Qualifications

  • Deep understanding and appreciation of Indigenous cultures, histories, and contemporary issues.
  • Experience in education, instructional roles or counselling, preferably in an Indigenous focused program.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with diverse participants.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed approaches and their relevance to Indigenous communities.
  • Ability to create inclusive and culturally safe learning environments.
  • Familiarity with community engagement and volunteerism.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage instructional materials and participant records.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing needs and schedules.
  • Commitment to lifelong learning and ongoing professional development.
  • Bachelor of Education, Social Work or Indigenous Studies degree, an acceptable combination of education and training may be considered.

  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Experience with curriculum development and program delivery.
  • Ability to complete program reports and presentations.
  • Capacity to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and efficient.
  • Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
