Material Scientist

Are you looking for a role that will challenge you? Our Materials Science Branch is looking for a Material Scientist! The incumbent will be part of a team specializing in research and development related to characterizing the performance of nuclear reactor materials and fuels.

Within a reactor core, structural materials and fuels experience microstructural changes, which have the potential to affect the integrity and the in-core components.

The incumbent would apply microstructure characterization techniques to study material degradation, and assess the impact on long term operation.

What you will be doing!

• Leading or contributing to investigations related to the characterization of nuclear reactor materials and fuels degradation.
• Developing the overall goals of the characterization exercise, and providing technical guidance to technologists, or scientists / engineers on appropriate characterization techniques.
• Documenting the results of the research, including presenting the results to commercial customers, regulators, and at international conferences.
• Participating in the safe operation of laboratories.
• Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for :

• Education
• PhD in a physical science or engineering, from a university of recognized standing, or membership in an engineering or scientific professional organization authorized by statute to establish qualification in that organization.
• Experience
• Two (2) years of work experience in conducting research and development related to microstructural characterization of nuclear materials and fuels.
• Two (2) years of experience in applying a Focused Ion Beam / Scanning Electron Microscope in materials characterization.
• Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
• Proven communications skills, including presenting research work at international conferences and authoring research papers in peer-reviewed journals
• Security Clearance Eligibility Required
• Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and / or the United Kingdom.

Location :

This role is a fully onsite role that requires the employee to primarily work atCNL’s Chalk River Laboratorysite, with only occasional opportunities to work remotely, if desired by the employee.
