Position Title - Senior Power Systems Engineer, Mining, Minerals & Metals.

Purpose :

Senior Power Systems Engineer with experience in Mining & Minerals plants, is required to work within focused study teams and multi-disciplinary teams involved in integrated power system plans, pre-feasibility / feasibility / system impact assessment, and system performance studies for both AC and DC project developments and generation / load connections.

Candidate must be able to work independently, be a self-starter and have excellent communication skills and work well within the project and discipline team.

He / she will coordinate all planning activities and those of their teams to maintain project schedules and ensure successful project completion.

The person will perform the duties in accordance with all applicable codes and standards.

Responsibilities :

  • Perform power system engineering analysis of industrial electric power systems in the areas of coordination of protection, short-circuit calculation, arc-flash hazard analysis, load flow, power quality, design improvements of medium- and low-voltage electrical distribution systems, transient stability, and electromagnetic transient.
  • Evaluate analysis results and prepare written report of findings, conclusions, recommendations, and mitigation solutions.
  • Perform electrical design improvements primarily to support upgrades of facilities’ electrical distribution system in conjunction with the customers’ needs, specifically to meet sustainability goals and improve system safety and reliability
  • Utilize Engineering skills and applicable codes and standards to implement electrical systems that are safe, reliable, and economical
  • Review of planning / system performance studies for compliance with prevailing standards and criteria and good engineering practice.
  • Analyze power systems using specialized software e.g ETAP, SKM, etc.
  • Knowledge of connection standards (IESO) and conversant with Utility requirements (HONI, SASKPOWER, etc.)
  • Provide Engineering cost estimates and bid proposals.
  • Manage project timeline commitments to customers and ensure long-term relationships
  • The ability to work within a team environment with a minimum of supervision and to customer, Company, and Industry standards
  • Direct the work of junior designers and ensure the work is in accordance with the client requirements and relevant project specifications
  • Ability to travel to job sites to perform site walkdown to document as installed conditions
  • The position reports to Department Manager, Electrical and Instrumentation & Controls Canada East.
  • Opportunity exists in Markham & Sarnia, Ontario.

What you will bring

Technical and Industry Experience :

  • 10+ years of experience in power system analysis with solid experience working on Mining, Minerals & Metals (MMM) projects.
  • Proficient in electromagnetic transients (EMT) analysis and in using software packages such as PSCAD, EMTP-RV, etc.
  • Proficient in Load flow, short-circuit, Arc Flash, Protection & Co-ordination, Harmonic Analysis and transient stability simulation analysis, using software packages such as SKM, ETAP, PSS®E, ASPEN, etc.

including modules for load flow, short-circuit, and transient stability analysis.

  • Knowledge of Co-Gen plant will be an asset.
  • Knowledge of control theory, dynamic modeling, and numerical methods is desirable.
  • Knowledge of additional power systems analysis software applications is desirable.
  • High level of interpersonal communication skills.
  • Candidates must be eligible to work in Canada.
  • Registered with PEO or able to immediately upon employment
  • Registration with IEEE, CIGRE, and / or other applicable engineering associations is desirable.

Education Qualifications, Accreditation, Training :

Required :

BS degree in Electrical Engineering.

Preferred :

Post-graduate (MS or PhD) degrees in Power Systems are desirable.
