The Engineering Specialist - Mechanical will be a key part of the Canem Major Pursuit Team and will use their engineering experience to support the Director of Major Pursuits in various activities including collaborating and driving the consultant team towards a competitive pursuit submission.

The Engineering Specialist will have the ability to execute multiple tasks concurrently and will support other business units within Canem.

What You Will Be Working On

The Engineering Specialist Mechanical is responsible for duties assigned by the supervisor, including :

  • Review and understand project technical requirements and applicable regulatory requirements
  • Develop detailed design schedules that are coordinated with the overall project schedule
  • Collaboration with consultant and contractor teams
  • Coordinate with other parties and provide information in a timely manner to avoid delay with the design process
  • Regular reporting to Director related to design schedule performance and quality of deliverables
  • Work with Business Development staff to construct and maintain relationships with clients, design consultants, and other stakeholders
  • Promote, and maintain a positive safety culture within the team, without compromise.
  • Contribute to RFQ responses
  • Provide value engineering reviews for DBB and CM type projects
  • Provide technical / engineering support on construction projects to assist with code challenges

Execution :

  • Ensure that design policies and procedures are followed
  • Identify project and technical risks
  • Produce schematic level analysis of all mechanical systems
  • Work with consultants to develop a lean compliant design for key Building Mechanical Systems including HVAC, Plumbing, Fire Protection as well as Building Automation / Controls
  • Work with suppliers to source cost effective solutions
  • Support estimators in material and labor take-offs
  • Attend design meetings during RFP and Design Development stages
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of Canem’s pursuit process maps and risk management tools
  • Monitor the compliance and contractual obligations and notify the team of any risks
  • Monitor ongoing design efforts to ensure compliance and cost-effective design using your knowledge and experience in comparison of mechanical systems including value / life cycle cost analysis
  • Coordinate with VDC team and contribute to the development of BIM Execution Plans
  • Audit the design documents against the requirements, ensuring they are compliant and meet industry quality standards
  • Provide support to the Construction team as required and ensure the design documents meet the Construction Team’s requirements

What We Are Looking For

The Engineering Specialist - Mechanical position requires a highly experienced, intermediate to senior level engineer of healthcare and institutional projects with proven success in executing design-build type projects.

Canem promotes a flexible working arrangement that suits both Canem’s and the employees’ needs, which will be discussed further with the successful candidate.

Travel to project and vendor sites will be required and should be expected for 10-15% of the time.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Progressive career growth in mechanical construction projects ranging from design to project lead
  • Proven ability to provide innovative solutions on design build projects that yield competitive advantages
  • P.Eng designation in at least one Province
  • RCMP ERS clearance or ability to obtain

Minimum Qualifications :

  • 5 years experience in construction projects
  • 3 years experience working on design build projects.
  • Current knowledge of Canadian building and municipal codes and regulations
  • Excellent knowledge of industry products, practices and standards
  • Ability to learn quickly, be flexible and adaptable
  • Strong organizational abilities and demonstrated attention to detail
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong time management skills, specifically the ability to multi-task, prioritize, and re-prioritize
  • Able to work effectively both independently and in team settings
  • Working knowledge of BIM tools including REVIT
  • Good understanding of OSHA, ANSI, ASHRAE and NFPA regulations
  • Good understanding of LEED guidelines and energy codes including ASHRAE and NECB
