About the Role :
This position provides client-centered, trauma-informed services to refugees transitioning to life in a Canada by providing practical assistance and emotional support. The role encompasses the period from the refugees' arrival in Canada until they move into permanent housing. RAPWs conduct settlement assessments, help clients navigate the settlement process, and provide financial and temporary accommodations to promote stability and personal success. This role is dedicated to addressing the unique needs of resettlement, enhancing the overall quality of life for participants, and empowering them to achieve their personal goals. The RAP Program Support Worker carries out their duties in a professional manner and in accordance with all YMCA policies and procedures, standards of practice, health and safety standards, child protection standards, and contractual, legal, and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities :
1. Assessment & Support :
- Conduct initial assessments of newly arrived refugees to understand their needs and create individualized resettlement plans.
- Assist clients in completing required paperwork for resettlement services, including government forms, housing applications, and benefits enrollment.
- Ensure clients are aware of their rights and available resources in Canada.
- Help clients secure temporary and permanent housing, ensuring the accommodation meets their needs and is appropriate for their family size.
- Assist with the logistics of moving into new homes, including transportation, setting up utilities, and purchasing necessary household items.
- Ensure that clients understand their housing rights and responsibilities.
- Respond to and assist with crisis situations, including mental health, financial difficulties, family issues, or health emergencies.
- Provide immediate support, intervene as necessary, and refer clients to emergency services when required.
- Ensure that clients are aware of emergency contacts, including mental health crisis lines, domestic violence shelters, and healthcare services.
- Offer listening support and facilitate access to counseling or therapeutic services as needed.
- Encourage the development of peer support networks, including connecting clients with others from similar backgrounds or experiences.
- Support clients in integrating into their new community by connecting them with local cultural, recreational, and social activities.
- Promote cultural awareness and sensitivity among clients and local community members, helping to bridge cultural gaps.
- Assist clients in understanding and accessing educational opportunities for themselves and their children, including school enrollment, language courses, and vocational training.
- Conduct move-in and move-out inspections, as well as hotel visits to assess the condition of accommodation.
- Develop and implement a building curriculum based on the topics outlined in the RAP handbook
2. Referral & Resource Navigation :
Advocate on behalf of clients to access services and resources that may not be readily available, such as legal aid, mental health counseling, or specialized medical care.Refer clients to community organizations, legal assistance programs, and other specialized services as needed.Liaise with other professionals, including case managers, social workers, and community service providers, to ensure comprehensive support for clients.3. Orientation & Information Sessions :
Provide clients with orientation sessions about their new environment, including practical information on housing, healthcare, education, transportation, and local laws.Assist clients in understanding the cultural, social, and legal norms of their new country, helping to reduce stress and confusion related to resettlement.Provide information about community resources, including support groups, language classes, employment opportunities, and legal assistance.4. Cultural Sensitivity & Support :
Promote and practice cultural sensitivity when working with diverse immigrant populations.Provide emotional and social support to newcomers, offering a safe and welcoming environment where clients feel comfortable sharing their challenges and seeking assistance.Help clients understand Canadian cultural norms, and community life.5. Monitoring & Reporting :
Maintain detailed and accurate case notes and records, ensuring compliance with privacy laws and organizational policies.Monitor client progress, adjust support plans as necessary, and provide regular updates to supervisors or case managers.Assist clients in setting short-term and long-term goals for self-sufficiency, and track their achievements and challenges.Prepare regular reports on activities, client engagement, and service delivery for program managers.Use feedback and data to improve strategies and enhance service delivery.6. Other :
Comply with funder mandates for participation and promotion requirements.Support participants within YMCA guidelines and adhere to the contracted performance outcomes.Perform case management as per Standards of Practice guidelines and funder mandates.Other duties as assigned.Qualifications : 1. Education :
A degree in social work, human services, community development, or a related field (or equivalent experience).2. Experience :
Minimum of 2 years of experience working with immigrant, refugee, or marginalized populations in a settlement or social service setting.Experience with case management or program delivery is an asset.Knowledge of immigrant and refugee issues, settlement services, and local community resources.Demonstrated experience in facilitating groups.3. Skills & abilities
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.Cultural competence and sensitivity to the needs of immigrant and refugee communities.Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.Strong problem-solving, advocacy, and interpersonal skills.Knowledge of local immigration laws, settlement services, and community resources.Fluency in multiple languages is highly desirable, especially languages spoken by local immigrant or refugee populations.Proficient in Microsoft Office and technically savvy to provide general administration, statistical reports, maintain databases, etc.4. Other Requirements :
Ability to travel within the local community and attend off-site activities or meetings.Flexibility to work evenings or weekends as needed for community events or meetings.Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple cases.Empathy, patience, and dedication to helping individuals successfully integrate into the community.Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle required.WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS :
