Summary
The Hope to Health Clinic, Research and Innovation Centre in the Downtown Eastside is a unique and innovative health clinic comprised of a multidisciplinary clinical team focused on providing primary and specialty care for patients / clients in the Downtown Eastside(DTES).
The R&I centre is staffed by an interdisciplinary team (e.g., physicians, nurses, counsellors, peer navigators) and provides wrap-around healthcare to clients ensuring they receive the full continuum of care under one roof.
Hope to Health Clinic works as part of the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV / AIDS.(BC-CfE).
The BC-CfE is a world-renowned HIV / AIDS Centre with innovative, low barrier approach to healthcare delivery in clinical practice and an integrated group of research concentrations in Laboratory Sciences, Clinical Trials, Population Health and Epidemiology, Health Economics and Professional Education Programs.
A multidisciplinary team of clinicians including Physicians, Nurses, Social Workers and Peers and researchers including Health Economists, Epidemiologists, Clinical Researchers, Statisticians, Programmers, and Data Analysts work collaboratively to improve the health of British Columbians with HIV and communities facing socio-economic barriers in accessing healthcare.
Job Summary
The Psychologist, Hope to Health Primary Care Clinic reports to the Professional Practice Leader, Psychology, Providence Health Care and works under the clinical direction of the Regional Practice Leader Psychology Professional Practice, Vancouver Coastal Health.
The Psychologist, CFE HIV / AIDS is responsible for the provision of a full range psychological, supervisory, and program evaluation services.
Working independently and as a member of an interdisciplinary team, completes psychological assessments, provides psychological treatment, evaluates the effectiveness and appropriateness of treatment and facilitates education of clients.
Maintains client records including the documentation of client diagnosis and most effective form of treatment and prepares progress notes and psychological reports.
Liaises with external agencies and establishes and maintains effective working relationships with stakeholders. Attends clinical / case conferences.
Provides formal and informal consultations, participates in quality improvement and risk management activities, provides clinical teaching and supervision to students and conducts and participates in research.
About You
Education and Experience :
Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from a recognized and accredited learning institution. Current registration with the College of Psychologists of British Columbia or registration with the College within one year of employment.
Training in team-based health psychology is required.
Two years recent related experience working in primary care or similar settings including experience working with and leading psychological interventions, consultation, and interdisciplinary team work with chronic health and mental health patients.
Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrated knowledge in Primary Care Behavioral Health.
- Demonstrated ability in evidence-based psychological assessment, including structured and semi-structured diagnostic assessment.
Knowledge of therapeutic, diagnostic and consultation techniques.
- Demonstrated ability in treatment and management of anxiety disorders, mood disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, and substance use disorders.
- Knowledge of the principles of recovery in mental illness.
- Knowledge and background in clinical health psychology with a focus on integrated primary care.
- Knowledge and understanding of cognitive and behavioural health change.
- Demonstrated ability to provide effective psychological treatment to people with various chronic health conditions.
- Demonstrated knowledge of clinical health psychology, behavioural change models, cognitive therapy, psychological treatment development and treatment integrity.
- Knowledge of psychopharmacology (e.g., indications and side-effects).
- Knowledge of other health care disciplines and their role in patient care.
- Knowledge of evidence-based psychological practice.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and to contribute as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
- Demonstrated ability to provide effective consultation.
- Demonstrated ability to teach and supervise.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, including comprehensive written assessments.

What You’ll Do
Completes brief psychological assessments of clients, using standardized and evidence- based interview and assessment procedures.
Within a bio / psycho / social treatment model and working as part of an interdisciplinary team, incorporates psychological assessment results with the broader treatment plan.
- Provides short-term treatment to patients identified to be at risk for developing chronic disease or in the early stages of chronic disease to make lifestyle cognitive and behavioural modifications (including but not limited to physical activity, nutrition, stress management, sleep, medication adherence, dealing with negative emotions, enhancing well-being and problem solving).
- Provides short-term treatment to patients identified to be at risk for developing mental illness or those with existing mental illness.
- Develops and facilitates group-based treatment programs.
- Maintains electronic and paper patient records by documenting assessment findings, treatment plan, client participation in the program as well as treatment progress outcomes and discharge plans.
- Coordinates with medical and mental health providers to ensure wrap-around and comprehensive care for clients requiring a higher level of mental health assessment and treatment.
- Provides continuing education to physicians and other health care providers to increase community capacity and understanding of behavioural and cognitive contributors to health outcomes.
- Evaluates the effectiveness of the psychological treatments and provides new recommendations and program development as appropriate.
- Maintains liaison with referring physicians and other professionals regarding clients' total care.
- Leads the development of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines, pathways, protocols and decision support tools for family practice patients.
- Assists with the analysis of data in order to make necessary adjustments to guidelines and pathways.
- Attends and participates in multidisciplinary conferences, medical rounds, service and department meetings as required and appropriate.
- Participates in program evaluation, program development, and program implementation.
- Participates in clinical research.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
