Land Mobile Radio Engineer (LMR Engineer)
Location : Edmonton, Alberta, Canada - Onsite
Contract Term : April 1, 2026 - March 31, 2029 (3 Years)
Extension : Optional 24-month extension (up to March 2031)
Working Hours :
- 7.25 hours per business day
- Up to 1,860 hours per year
- Full-time engineering support during standard business hours
- Field deployment required as needed

AFRRCS radio tower sitesMicrowave and satellite link sitesDispatch centersFirst responder facilitiesSupport for Alberta First Responders Radio Communications System (AFRRCS) , a mission‑critical, province‑wide APCO P25 public‑safety radio network.
This full‑time engineering role includes RF engineering, radio testing and approval, spectrum planning, Safety Code 6 assessments, interference troubleshooting , and technical support for police, fire, EMS, sheriffs, and public safety partners across Alberta. Work is primarily onsite in Edmonton, with up to 25% field travel.
Education & Qualification Requirements
Education : Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (accredited engineering program)
Licensing / Certifications
Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGAEligible to provide independent professional engineering servicesSecret Security Clearance (mandatory)Recent Criminal Record Check (within last 90 days)Technical Qualifications
Strong expertise in :
RF Engineering & PropagationP25 LMR Systems (preferably Harris)Spectrum / Frequency Engineering & ISED LicensingMicrowave & Satellite CommunicationsDistributed Antenna Systems (DAS)RFI / EMI TroubleshootingSafety Code 6 (RF exposure compliance)Ability to travel province‑wideExperience Requirements
Minimum Experience : 5+ years licensed engineering experience

APCO P25 LMR networks (Phase 1 and Phase 2)Harris radio systems, configuration, tuning, and testingRF propagation analysis, modelling, and coverage studiesSpectrum planning, coordination, and interference mitigationISED licensing processesMicrowave backhaul and satellite communicationsDAS systems design and validationSafety Code 6 assessments (EMR / EMF compliance)Root‑cause analysis for interference issuesEngineering documentation, reporting, and system performance analysisField engineering support at radio towers and public safety sitesResponsibilities
Radio Testing & Approvals : Evaluate, test, verify, and approve subscriber radios for AFRRCS compliance. Conduct P25 configuration, programming, and tuningRF Engineering & Spectrum Management : Conduct RF propagation analysis and coverage validation. Perform frequency planning and spectrum coordination. Complete ISED licensing supportSafety Code 6 Compliance : Perform RF exposure analysis and ensure compliance with Safety Code 6Interference Investigation : Detect, analyze, and resolve RFI / EMI issues affecting AFRRCS. Conduct tower and site interference assessmentsTower Collocation & Field Engineering : Review tower collocation applications for RF impact. Provide engineering support at AFRRCS sites across AlbertaPublic Safety Agency Support : Assist police, fire, EMS, sheriffs, and government responder agencies with radio and system issuesDocumentation & Reporting : Prepare monthly engineering reports, technical analyses, and system evaluations. Maintain accurate documentation, logs, and compliance recordsSystem Upgrades & Improvements : Support system enhancements, resiliency projects, and technology evolution initiativesSeniority level
