About the Role
Our Mechanical Engineers are responsible for design of highly complex opto‑mechanical and electromechanical components from concept straight through to production. The work is driven by specific objectives, goals and defined boundaries but requires the application of advanced engineering experience and specialized knowledge for complex assignments.
Primary Responsibilities
- Responsible for mechanical design and analysis of complex opto‑mechanical and electromechanical products from concept through to production using modern CAD and analysis tools.
- Perform innovation and / or suggest ways to improve systems and / or reduce cost.
- Carry out complex engineering assignments that often require modifying established methods and devising new approaches, ensuring timely completion of difficult projects.
- Act as a major technical contributor or lead to project goals and objectives.
- Contribute to the definition of departmental best practices and design approaches.
- Provide technical or project‑related guidance and direction to other staff, mentoring on complex design practices.
- Participate in design reviews as a presenter or reviewer.
- Support the verification and validation of new product designs.
- Maintain awareness of mechanical industry trends and new technologies relevant to future product development.
Required Capabilities
Proficient user of FEA for static and dynamic analysis of complex assemblies, preferably Ansys.Proficient user of a CFD package, preferably Ansys.Advanced knowledge of a 3D CAD system, preferably SolidWorks.Experience with MATLAB Simulink, Simscape or equivalent, applied to multiphysics simulation or digital signal processing.Extensive knowledge of drawing standards and mechanical design practice.Strong grasp of mechanical dynamics and vibration.Strong grasp of strength of materials and classical analysis methods.Strong understanding of opto‑mechanical design principles.Knowledge of machining, casting, sheet metal and composite manufacturing techniques.Experience with rapid prototyping techniques and methods.Knowledge of materials science.Technical leadership skills.Strong communication skills and ability to prepare detailed technical reports and specifications.Highly motivated self‑starter with willingness to learn and grow in a fast‑paced environment.Eligible for Canadian government security clearance and meets the Controlled Goods Registration Program requirements.Desired Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree with minimum 6 years of prior relevant experience, ideally 8 years in Mechanical Systems Engineering.Graduate Degree with minimum 4 years of prior relevant experience.In lieu of a degree, minimum of 10 years of prior related experience.At L3Harris, we foster an inclusive and equitable workplace.
