Job Description

At McMaster University, our people are our most valuable asset. We strive to attract, develop, and retain talented faculty and staff, and to foster inclusive excellence which values the strengths, perspectives, and contributions of each individual. McMaster’s profile and stature has evolved to one of the Top 70 Universities in the World and we are recognized as Canada’s Most Research Intensive University. McMaster is also recognized as one of the top employers in the Hamilton/Niagara region and has been recognized as one of Canada’s Top Diversity employers for the past 6 years.

McMaster University is seeking a dynamic and experienced Senior Manager of IT to support its widely respected McMaster Nuclear Enterprise, as it undergoes an important organizational change initiative and supports growing and increasingly complex nuclear activities on campus. This role will focus on integrating the facility more closely into the university’s broader IT environment while ensuring the facility’s specialized nuclear IT needs are met.

Background

The McMaster Nuclear Enterprise operates all of McMaster’s nuclear facilities, including Canada’s largest research reactor, and supports licensed regulatory activities on and off the McMaster campus. Since its construction in 1959, the McMaster Nuclear Reactor has been a multi-purpose research reactor that provides neutrons for medical isotope production and scientific research. Enabling discoveries in medicine, clean energy, nuclear safety, materials and environmental science, while providing cancer treatments for more than 70,000 patients every year. By driving groundbreaking discoveries in energy, medicine and materials it fuels job creation and economic growth and offers unique training opportunities for future generations of nuclear leaders.

About the Position

The successful candidate will oversee IT service delivery, cybersecurity standards, desktop and frontline support services, and integration with enterprise-wide systems, including Microsoft productivity tools, Campus Relationship Management (CRM), and other key tools that will provide efficiency and technology enhancements to the facility. Given the highly technical and security-sensitive nature of nuclear research and operations, this role requires a balance of enterprise IT leadership and deep knowledge of mission-critical, highly regulated IT environments.

This position will formally report into the Office of the Associate Vice President and Chief Technology Officer (AVP and CTO), and specifically to one of the UTS Directors. The position will also report to the Chief Nuclear Officer, and will be fully focused on the technology and IT Services and Systems needs of the McMaster Nuclear Enterprise, leading IT personnel and providing support in that area.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead IT strategy, architecture, and service delivery for the McMaster Nuclear Enterprise, ensuring alignment with university-wide IT standards while meeting specialized nuclear facility requirements.
  • Maintain and implement a long-term IT roadmap for the MNE, based on a completed IT Services Review and preliminary activity list in consultation with the MNE leadership and IT personnel, in addition with the AVP and CTO.
  • Oversee IT operations, including infrastructure, cybersecurity, desktop and frontline support, and research IT services within the facility.
  • Drive the integration of the facility’s IT environment with university-wide tools, including Microsoft 365, identity and access management systems, and cybersecurity frameworks.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders, including researchers, facility operators, and university IT leadership, to assess and address IT needs.
  • Ensure compliance with cybersecurity policies, nuclear security regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Develop and manage IT budgets, vendor relationships, and service contracts.
  • Supervise and mentor a team of IT professionals, fostering a culture of service excellence, technical expertise, and continuous improvement.

Core Competencies:

COMMUNICATING: Clearly, frequently and consistently exchanges the organizational knowledge, plans and decisions which are necessary for meaningful participation and optimal work by team members; listens actively – with insight and respect – to others’ perspectives and perceives and reacts sensitively to others’ non-verbal cues; builds relationships and attracts support; gives recognition to groups and individuals who contribute to the University’s achievement.

DEVELOPING PEOPLE: Advocates and enables continuous learning opportunities for all employees; encourages employee involvement in decision making as an integral part of the developmental process; active in self-development.

LEADING: Known for achievement; recognizes achievement requires the leading others, and; therefore, recruits the right people; engages them in the vision of McMaster; solves problems that arise; evaluates progress towards goals and objectives; negotiates resolutions to conflicts; protects/heals the organization during times of change; integrates stakeholders to achieve synergies.

EMBRACING CHANGE: Exhibits a passion for building a creative, innovative and excellent university. Works effectively with ambiguity and complex issues while searching for innovations and improvements to make tomorrow’s workplace better than today’s.

OPTIMIZING SERVICE RELATIONSHIPS: Identifies, builds and manages relationships which are service-oriented, student-centred, and will systematically create positive current and future benefits for the University.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field; equivalent experience will be considered.
  • 8-10 years of progressive experience in IT, including at least 3-5 years in a leadership role.
  • Experience in IT operations within highly secure or regulated environments (e.g., nuclear, aerospace, healthcare, or government sectors) is strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of cybersecurity frameworks, IT service management (ITIL), and enterprise IT infrastructure.
  • Experience managing IT projects, budgets, and cross-functional teams.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft 365, identity and access management solutions, and endpoint management tools.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.

Additional Considerations:

  • This position requires occasional after-hours work and participation in an on-call rotation to support critical IT services.
  • Security clearance will be required in order to perform this role, due to the sensitive nature of the MNE facility’s operations and regulatory licensing requirements.

This role offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of enterprise IT and specialized research operations, shaping the future of IT service delivery for a highly technical and security-sensitive environment.
