Duties
CFIA Veterinarians play a key role in Canadian food safety, forming the first line of defense against the spread of many diseases.
They help to maintain healthy practices in the food and livestock industries, including sound meat hygiene and terrestrial / aquatic animal health and within research and diagnostic laboratories.
Their work includes educating the public and industry officials about the potential hazards of importing products of animal origin, or through inspection of animals and meat products.
CFIA Veterinarians work in a broad range of environments, performing a wide variety of critical tasks.
Responsibilities may include working in slaughter establishments performing ante-mortem and post-mortem inspection of animals, export inspections of animals, providing consultation services to inspection staff, stakeholders and other government organizations;
training of inspection personnel and new veterinarians; and compiling and maintaining reports for management; ensuring compliance with regulations and ensuring humane transport of animals in accordance with international standards and regulations.

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION
EEd1 : Graduation from a recognized school of Veterinary Medicine, defined as :
- graduation from a veterinary school accredited or approved by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA); or
- graduation from another veterinary school and holding a Certificate of Qualification (Parts A, B & C) granted by the National Examining Board of the CVMA.
Applicants submitting education credentials from a non-Canadian institution are responsible for obtaining certification that these credentials are the equivalent of the Canadian education level required for the position.

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION
Eligibility for membership in a Canadian veterinary association, defined as :
- current members of a Canadian veterinary association with a license recognized by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association; and
- non-members of Canadian veterinary associations holding a Certificate of Qualification granted by the National Examining Board (NEB) of the CVMA.

Conditions of employment
Reliability Status security clearance - Applicants who have not lived in Canada for the past five (or ten, depending on security level) years may be required to submit a police certificate from each country in which they have lived for six months or more during this period, as well as other documentation required for the security screening process.
Failure to submit this documentation if requested will eliminate the application from further consideration.
