DESCRIPTION :
On behalf of our client, Sentient HR is recruiting a professional, energetic, and results-oriented Assistant Director to provide executive and operational leadership support at Hawthorne on Essex Daycare, nestled in the Christie Pits Park area of Toronto and located within Essex Junior and Senior Public School and Hawthorne II Bilingual Alternative Junior School.
The Daycare provides care to over 160 children from toddler to school age. The Assistant Director works on a 12-month schedule with preparation time for the school year provided during the months of July and August.
The successful candidate must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in child care and the provision of a safe, healthy, and caring environment to all children.
The responsibilities of the Assistant Director are focused upon working collaboratively with and supporting the Executive Director in leading the operations of a high calibre child care centre.
Working with the Executive Director and the Board, the Assistant Director will implement the vision and goals of the Daycare in day-to-day operations.
Duties assisting in overseeing the day-to-day operations, preparing an environment where children can reach their potential, inspiring and directing the faculty to work at their highest capacity, building trust with multiple stakeholders, and ensuring that all legislative requirements are met.

RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Knowledge and compliance with all relevant legislation and requirements.
- Work with the Executive Director to manage the day-to-day operation of the Daycare.
- Oversee of curriculum implementation and program delivery.
- Direct, monitor, coach and inspire staff in developing a high-quality curriculum and an exceptional standard of care, including performance management and appraisals.
- Promote professionalism and a positive atmosphere through team initiatives.
- Assist the Executive Director in overseeing relevant HR functions, such as : recruit, train, monitor and evaluate staff;
- scheduling; oversee professional development; consider and decide HR issues such as requests for accommodation, leaves of absence and discipline;
and be familiar with and follow guidelines of the Collective Agreement.
- Support collective bargaining cycles and implementation, including support to the Executive Director, Board of Directors and / or participation on the Employer’s bargaining team.
- Support the Executive Director in union-management issues.
- Communicate effectively with staff, families, and partners within the community.
- Maintain communication with Toronto Children’s Services (TCS) regarding monthly attendance recording, subsidies, TCS wait list and statistics;
maintain communication with all other municipal and provincial agencies as appropriate.
- Maintain secure and confidential manual and electronic records, including children and staff data, children’s reports, attendance records, time sheet, petty cash, fire drills and assigned tasks.
- Available to work outside of the Daycare’s standard hours, including monthly evening meetings with the Board of Directors.
- Take on acting executive responsibilities in the absence of the Executive Director.
- Other duties as deemed necessary by the Executive Director.
FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist in financial management of the Daycare, including but not limited to payroll, budget preparation and monitoring, and purchasing supplies.
- Review and advise on financial budgets; work with funding agencies; review monthly financial statements.
- Assist with the collection and documentation of parent fees.
- Collaborate with the Executive Director and Bookkeeper to support responsible fiscal management of the annual budget, including monthly reporting to the Board of Directors and the Board Finance Committee.
QUALIFICATIONS :
- Minimum five (5) years of experience in a child care centre as an Assistant Director / Supervisor.
- Registered Early Childhood Educator in Good Standing with the College of Early Childhood Educators (or equivalent).
- Post-secondary degree (or equivalent experience).
- Solid understanding of the early learning, child care and family resources environment.
- Clear, effective oral and written communication.
- Knowledge and proficiency in program development, community development, program delivery and evaluation.
- Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
- Working knowledge of human resource practices.
- Competent in Microsoft Excel and the Microsoft Office Suite.
- Experience in a unionized daycare centre and experience in collective bargaining is an asset but not mandatory.
- Familiarity with the Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care system is an asset.
REQUIRED DOCUMENTS :
- Vulnerable Sector Check.
- Standard First Aid and CPR level C.
- Health Assessment and Immunization as required by the Ontario Ministry of Education.
SUMMARY :
In summary, the Assistant Director is responsible for working with the Executive Director on management and administration of the Daycare and will report directly to the Executive Director.
