The Opportunity

The Landscape Protection Unit of the Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport is looking for a highly skilled, strategic and influential team player to join us as a Senior Park Landscape Ecologist .

It is an opportunity which will allow you to take a lead role in shaping the future direction and approach to ecological management of the provincial park system, as well as positively impact the health and long-term protection of provincial park landscapes.

Reporting to the Director of the Landscape Protection Unit, the position will provide science-based direction and leadership to ministry staff, including ecologists within the team and senior leadership.

The position is currently located in Regina, Saskatchewan and alternate Saskatchewan-based headquarters will be considered.

As the Senior Park Landscape Ecologist you will be responsible to :

  • Assist and influence the development of strategic corporate plans and provide technical strategic direction for ecological management of provincial parks;
  • Geospatially assess provincial park ecosystem health and identify priority treatment or mitigation work to maintain ecosystem health;
  • Lead and deliver on ecosystem-based management planning and implementation, species at risk management, policy and research development which will support increased awareness and promote overall health and aesthetic condition of park landscapes;
  • Provide guidance to the ministry and to the private sector to ensure initiatives and developments proposed will enable education and enjoyment opportunities that are aligned with our goal to protect natural and cultural resources for the benefit of all current and future generations;
  • Network and collaborate with other government jurisdictions, academia, Non-Government Organizations (NGO’s), Indigenous groups and a wide variety of stakeholders, to promote the use of best management practices applicable to manage park landscapes and ecosystems;
  • Provide advice and guidance to a wide variety of audiences that persuades, convinces, builds support, educates and promotes a shared understanding of natural park landscapes, ecology and related policies;
  • Review and approve academic research requests on provincial park lands; and,
  • Utilize all-terrain-vehicles (ATVs) and snowmobiles in order to conduct surveys and monitoring activities.

Ideal Candidate

To be successful in the position, you will possess excellent strategic and critical thinking skills. You will have exceptional written and verbal communication skills, as well as excellent presentation skills.

Demonstrated experience in conducting effective facilitation and negotiation processes is required. In addition, you will have the ability to work independently and collaboratively with colleagues and other stakeholders in order to meet ministry goals and objectives.

You will have extensive knowledge of :

  • Advanced ecological management strategies and techniques;
  • Ecosystem-based or vegetation management planning and implementation;
  • Boreal forest, parkland and grassland ecology;
  • Forest and grassland management practices which can be applied to park landscapes to maintain ecosystem health;
  • The key role natural disturbances have in influencing and maintaining natural ecosystems;
  • Climate change effects and adaptation as it relates to natural ecosystems in west central Canada; and
  • Applicability of Geographic Information Systems and Remote sensing techniques to the management of ecological health.

Experience in the following would be considered a definite asset :

  • Geographic Information Systems data management analysis, and modeling; and
  • Application of remote sensing information in ecological modeling.

Typically, the knowledge and skills for this position would be obtained through a Master’s degree and / or PhD in boreal forest ecology, biodiversity conservation, resource management planning or other related fields of study coupled with several years of progressively responsible experience with ecosystem / vegetation management and emulation of natural disturbance events.

An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
