Reporting to the Manager, Human Resources, the incumbent is responsible for assisting the Management Team in areas related to health, safety, and Environmental Management Systems (EMS). To provide the teams at MLTI with information and direction relating to all areas of health, safety, and environmental issues.To Ensure improved environmental performance, compliance with all applicable environmental regulations, legislation, and customer requirements.
Major Responsibilities of Position
- Safety : Research, write, maintain and communicate to employees the safety policies and procedures through implementation and management of the Health & Safety program at MLTI. Co-ordinate & develop monthly safety talks and maintain tracking system. Conduct regular safety audits (safety awareness & hazard identification). Effectively communicate to all levels of the organization with regard to HSE issue as required
- H&S Co-ordination : Ensure compliance with ALL related Acts, regulations, and standards and to also keep current with these as they relate to our industry. Co-ordinate H&S audits, PPE audits, Environmental audits, external supplier audits, wellness audits, ISO audits and ERT audits. Continuously improve upon and maintain accident investigation data. First Aid and Medical Aid tracking system and create any reports as required. Monitoring PPE usage to continuously improve the quality and needs as required. Analyze safety concerns and trends Complete and coordinate all WSIB related activities and manage all employee Return to Work programs. As required be part of design of new equipment and programs and ensure that New Equipment Sign Offs and Pre-start Safety documents are reviewed. Maintaining and monitoring MSDS management system. Assist in writing, modifying and verifying Management System documents and procedures, and ISO 14001 documents / procedures, as related to safety. Attend daily production meetings at High Street and Wright Street.
- Training : Attend training and professional development courses and seminars to ensure best practice. Assist with the evaluation of the safety training program and its’ effectiveness. Maintain required designation and memberships in regards to HSE. Provide assistance with training programs as required Acquire appropriate resources for training from external parties, as required.
- JH&S Committee : Active member and coordinate meetings at all locations. Assist in follow up with action items. Coordinate any “ad hoc or special” meetings for the committee based on issues that arise. Update Committee Meeting minutes, post and communicate these by e-mail and communication boards. Ensure audits are completed in a timely fashion and that follow up takes place. Ensure that ALL audits are posted on communication boards .Other duties as required, including special projects as they arise.
- Environmental Management System (ISO 14001 : 2015) : Responsible for the implementation, maintenance, and promotion of the site’s certified Environmental Management System, including, but not limited to :
- Environmental Compliance : Responsible for the identification and management of all relevant environmental compliance obligations (local, Provincial and Federal) and spills response, awareness of regulatory changes and the communication with relevant regulatory bodies. This includes, but is not limited to :
- Environmental Program Management : Assisting with annual budgetary process, including Capital, to ensure appropriate funds are requested for environmental compliance programs, to support internal objectives, and continued improved environmental performance. Completion of periodic risk management activities. Working collaboratively with other departments (e.g. Production, Maintenance, Engineering, purchasing etc.) to ensure environmental requirements are being considered and met, and on special projects as they arise. Providing advice and support to the Management Team to ensure Meridian remains compliant with all relevant regulations, legislation, and customer requirements. Support internal / external environmental incident investigations, including root cause analysis, corrective and preventive actions, their verification, and relevant communications.

1 Occupational Health & Safety certification & Post-secondary education in relevant environmental field (e.g. Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Geography, Biology, Sustainability, Environmental Technology etc.). Essential
2 - 3 - 5 years’ experience Health, Safety and Environmental Fields. Essential
3 - Working knowledge of Ontario Health & Safety Act, and related Regulations. Working Knowledge and / or relevant training in Environmental Legislation (Provincial, Federal) Essential
4 Health & Safety Professional designation ( i.e. Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) and / or Canadian Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC) - Highly Desirable
5 Certified Environmental Management System Lead Auditor [EMSLA Designation] or actively working toward designation (e.g. recognized Lead Auditor Course completed). Highly Desirable
7 Auditor training for ISO 14000 or 45001 system - Preferred
8 Working Knowledge and / or relative training in Environmental legislation Preferred
9 Industrial Hygiene knowledge and training Preferred
