Director of Engineering - Edmonton, AB
Client is a Canadian company that offers custom metal products for railings, balconies, decks, extrusions and special fabrications. The Director of Engineering is a strategic and technical leader, responsible for overseeing all engineering and design operations across the organization. This role will drive process and product standardizations and facilitate continuous improvements of engineering and drafting workflows to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and scalability. The ideal incumbent will ensure designs meet high quality standards that align with multidisciplinary needs for production and client expectations, while supporting company growth objectives.
Responsibilities
- Lead and mentor a high-performing Engineering and Drafting team, fostering collaboration, accountability, and continuous learning.
- Define and communicate clear goals, performance metrics, and development plans for team members.
- Partner cross-functionally with Operations, Production, Sales, and Project Management to ensure alignment between design intent and manufacturing execution.
- Establish and maintain standardized design and documentation processes while enabling flexibility for custom projects.
Technical Oversight
Review and approve engineering designs for compliance with structural codes, building standards, and safety regulations throughout Canada and the United States.Ensure accurate calculations, material selection, and design feasibility for both custom and standardized products.Guide the development of product families, prototypes, and production-ready design templates.Serve as the final technical authority on engineering decisions impacting cost, safety, and manufacturability.Process & Product Development
Oversee and enhance the full lifecycle of product development—from concept through production release.Drive process optimization initiatives through software improvements, automation, and better data management.Collaborate with the Production team to streamline design-to-fabrication transitions, ensuring clarity and consistency.Manage continuous improvement initiatives related to time-to-market, cost control, and design accuracy.Technology & Software Innovation
Evaluate and implement advanced engineering tools (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Revit, or similar platforms) to improve design efficiency.Collaborate with IT and process teams to integrate software enhancements that improve workflow visibility, revision control, and KPI tracking.Promote an agile and technology-driven culture within the Engineering Department. Performance ManagementEstablish and monitor KPIs (e.g., design turnaround time, RFI volume, quality error rate, and production readiness).Use data-driven insights to identify trends, remove bottlenecks, and improve performance across teams. Develop and present regular performance reports to the Executive team, outlining results, risks, and opportunities.Quality & Compliance
Maintain quality design practices ensuring all output meets internal standards and client specifications.Oversee quality checks, drawing audits, and feedback loops between design and production.Ensure compliance with all applicable engineering codes, certifications, and industry regulations.Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering Certification : P.Eng designation (Professional Engineer) in good standing.10+ years of progressive engineering experience in manufacturing, construction, or related industries.5+ years in a leadership role overseeing multi-disciplinary technical teams.Proven experience with structural systems involving aluminum, steel, glass, or cladding.Background in both custom and standardized product development preferred.Strong proficiency in AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or equivalent 3D modeling software.Familiarity with engineering project management tools and ERP / PLM systems.Experience with Windows and façade / cladding systems is highly desirable.Excellent communication, influencing, and coaching abilities.Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities with a focus on process improvement.High accountability, attention to detail, and ability to lead through change.In-Office RequirementSome exposure to fabrication environment will be required (standard PPE provided)Seniority level
