Job Summary

Aligning with the purpose of Southlake, SRCC provides advanced radiation treatment to 1700 patients annually in the region, bringing state-of-the-art treatment closer to home.

Equipment in the Radiation Medicine Program includes 5 Elekta linear accelerators of the latest models and MosaiQ as the radiation oncology information system.

A Philips big-bore CT simulator and a Siemens Vision 600 PET-CT are on site for radiotherapy simulation. Our treatment planning system is currently transitioning from Pinnacle to RayStation.

In collaboration with the Regional Cardiac Program at Southlake, active investigation of cardiac irradiation for treatment of ventricular tachycardia is underway.

There is also an opportunity to access research funding available in the department on the topic of Quality Assurance.

The Medical Physics Department is in partnership with the Princess Margaret (PM) Cancer Centre, there are opportunities for project collaboration and participation in career development activities at PM.

The Medical Physics group is also active in education and training of medical physics residents through its CAMPEP accredited residency program at the University of Toronto (U of T), Department of Radiation Oncology.

The successful candidate has an opportunity to seek an academic appointment in the Department of Radiation Oncology at U of T.

The Medical Physicist will join a team of 5 physicists, 2 physics associates, 3 accelerator service technologists and a physics system analyst.

The Medical Physicist will participate in day-to-day clinical activities, clinical development / research, implementation of new technology and processes, as well as supervision of physics residents.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Commission new treatment planning system and upgrade / update of existing treatment planning system. Model beams produced by treatment machines.
  • Maintain functionality of the treatment planning system.
  • Review customized radiation treatment plans for each patient :

oassess the clinical and technical suitability,

oadvise on treatment plan design,

oensure safe radiation treatment to patient.

  • Consult with Radiation Oncologists and treatment planners about treatment plans for specific patients.
  • Contribute to multidisciplinary case review.
  • Commission new treatment machines and machines post-upgrade.
  • Commission new associated equipment and quality assurance equipment.
  • Collaborate with team to develop new treatment techniques to keep current with evolution of technology and clinical knowledge.
  • Oversee, perform and approve daily, weekly, monthly and annual quality control tests of treatment machines, CT simulator and other associated equipment.
  • Investigate and work with accelerator service personnel to correct machine performance issues.
  • Analyze data trends to intervene before treatment machines need to be removed from clinical service.
  • Conduct and advise on incident investigations and support implementation of subsequent corrective actions.
  • Assist Radiation Safety Officer to conduct activities in radiation safety program
  • Participate in clinical development projects.
  • Participate in clinical trials as co-investigators.
  • Perform credentialing requirements for clinical trial participation.
  • Participate in the Medical Physics Residency program as coordinator, instructor, mentor and evaluator.
  • Conduct training for new or returning employees on the use of treatment machines and other equipment / systems.
  • Conduct in-service sessions for the Radiation Therapy and Radiation Oncology groups.
  • Participation in activities with external partnering stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Medical Physics or related field
  • 2 years of Medical Physics in a resident or equivalent capacity required
  • Membership of the Canadian College of Medical Physicist (CCPM) or equivalent required, or commitment of obtaining CCPM membership (or equivalent) within 2 years of employment
  • A PhD degree in Medical Physics or a related area is preferred
  • Ability to apply medical physics principles, theories and concepts to resolve procedural and technical issues in the clinic.
  • Ability to perform in-depth analyses of a range of complex problems.
  • Use independent judgement to resolve complex clinical and / or research problems.
  • Knowledge and application of national and international practices / guidelines to maintain a quality and safe radiation treatment program at Southlake
  • A broad understanding of the fast changing technology in radiation medicine to help position the Southlake Radiation Medicine Program to meet the continual advancement in the field.
