The Provincial Park Division promotes Saskatchewan tourism, manages and enhances Saskatchewan's provincial parks system, conserves ecosystems and cultural resources and provides recreation and interpretive opportunities for park visitors.

The Opportunity

The Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport has an exciting opportunity for a flexible, self-starter to join the Safety and Training Unit as an OHS Consultant.

The ideal candidate will be instrumental in achieving the Ministry’s goal of Mission : Zero, including continuous improvements in health and safety performance(s) to reduce incidents.

In this position, you will be part of a team responsible for the development, coordination, and delivery of the ministry's safety training and risk management programs.

You will be required to :

  • Conduct incident investigations and workplace inspections independently and / or as part of a team;
  • Manage and conduct all workplace injury / illness reporting requirements to WCB, guide and direct employees, supervisors and managers in workplace accommodation;
  • Conduct internal safety training, course reviews and evaluate external safety training agencies;
  • Provide advice and interpretation of safety policies, safe work practices and OH&S legislation regarding safety issues, including work refusals to ministry Occupational Health Committees, managers, supervisors and workers;
  • Conduct assessments and evaluations of risk management issues related to public safety of ministry land, facilities and infrastructure, which requires experience in hazard identification, risk assessment and safety controls;
  • Develop safety policies, safe work practices, safe operating procedures, safety bulletins, and performance measure indicators for the safety management system; and
  • Coordinate and schedule the delivery of educational and safety related health assessment programs such as hearing conservation, respiratory protection and ergonomics.

Ideal Candidate

In order to be successful in the role, you will have :

  • Excellent oral / written communication skills in order to be able to share information to a variety of audiences that persuades, convinces, builds support, educates and promotes understanding;
  • Experience conducting incident investigations and workplace inspections;
  • Ability to synthesize information and ideas to develop projects, services, information sessions and workshops;
  • Experience planning, developing and evaluating learning materials and facilitating learning sessions at a level appropriate to the audience;
  • Experience recording and organizing a wide variety of information in a clear, concise, accurate and timely manner which allows others to understand;
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member with other individuals and organizations to meet client, program and ministry goals and objectives; and
  • Ability to accurately enter, format and access data using various computer software applications including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and operation of multimedia presentation equipment.

Typically, the knowledge and experience required to achieve the above is obtained through successful completion of an Occupational Health & Safety certificate or diploma and / or other relevant safety related training (Construction Safety Officer / Health & Safety Administrator) from a recognized safety association.

An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.

This position provides an opportunity to travel to multiple worksites and remote locations within the province and, as such, a valid Class 5 Saskatchewan Driver's License is required.

This role will require approximately 50% travel throughout Saskatchewan.
