Job Summary : Full‑time Anaesthesia Assistant position at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster, B.C. This role supports the Anaesthesiologist in the induction, maintenance and recovery phases of anesthesia, including monitoring physiological responses of patients during surgery.

Detailed Overview
In accordance with established standards of practice and guidelines, works under the direct clinical supervision of the Anaesthesiologist to provide technical support and clinical assistance in the induction, maintenance and recovery phases of anesthesia. Maintains, operates and calibrates anesthesiology equipment; documents procedures; participates on clinical committees, research and special projects.
Responsibilities
Provides diagnostic and therapeutic services under clinical direction of the Anaesthesiologist by assisting with and / or performing duties involving : pre‑induction; arterial line catheterization; endotracheal intubation; central line insertion; autotransfusion; pulmonary artery catheter insertion; epidural setup; assistance with MRI, CT, Angio as required.Performs and / or assists with arterial punctures, blood sampling, airway management and assists with difficult intubations.Checks and administers blood products, monitors vital signs for adverse reactions.Performs cell saving and blood salvaging during surgery.Administers inhaled medications, monitors airways, adjusts ventilation modalities.Administers drugs under supervision, observes side effects and efficacy, assists with block and conscious sedation procedures.Provides diagnostic data : arterial blood gas sampling, point‑of‑care analysis, pulmonary function testing, exhaled gas monitoring, vital signs, pulse oximetry, ECG recordings.Responds to airway emergencies, cardiac arrests in OR, PACU and other areas.Provides ventilatory support in PACU : ventilatory and airway management, high‑flow oxygen, specialty inhalational therapy.Supports pacemaker procedures, patient monitoring, analyzer operation, record completion.Assists with fiber‑optic bronchoscopy and intubations, equipment preparation and verification.Provides clinical education for Respiratory Therapy students and paramedics.Provides general orientation / education related to anesthesia equipment and procedures to medical / allied health professionals.Performs scheduled and routine maintenance and repairs on anesthesia and cell saving equipment, verifies vendor repairs with Biomedical Engineering.Maintains and calibrates anesthesia related equipment throughout the hospital in collaboration with Biomedical Engineering.Maintains documentation of procedures, co‑signs anaesthetic record sheet, enters data into databases.Participates on professional committees, drafting and revising patient‑care documentation and process improvement.Participates in research and special projects, collecting and analyzing data.Assists with transfer and transportation of ventilated patients, monitors respiratory status.Maintains professional knowledge by attending educational and training events.Performs other related duties as assigned.Qualifications
Education and Experience :
Graduation from an accredited postgraduate diploma Anaesthesia Assistant Program.Graduation from a recognized School of Respiratory Therapy Diploma Program plus three (3) years’ recent related clinical experience, or an equivalent combination.Eligible for membership with the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CSRT) and the British Columbia Society of Respiratory Therapy (BCSRT).Current certification in CPR, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).Skills and Abilities
Comprehensive knowledge of anesthesia assistant theory and practice.Broad knowledge of Canadian Anesthesiologist Society clinical practice guidelines.Ability to plan and implement anesthesia‑related plans of care.Ability to assess and respond to client responses to care.Ability to adapt to new or unexpected events.Effective verbal and written communication.Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary team.Broad knowledge of research processes.Ability to establish workload priorities in collaboration with others.Skill in CPR techniques.Computer skills, including use of a computerized patient‑care information system.Skill in using related medical equipment and supplies.Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.About Fraser Health
