Job Title : Community Disability Services Worker
Job Summary :
The Community Disability Services Worker is a front-line community disability services
role that supports the development of skills and relationships that help persons with
disabilities work towards and meet their own goals.
Reports To : Operations Manager
Key Duties and Responsibilities :
Carry out person-centered plans to help adults with their personal development,
community involvement, behavior management, and / or personal care.
Help individuals participate meaningfully in setting personal goals and planning
the steps needed to reach them, and in expanding opportunities for personal
growth and meaningful roles within the community. This includes following the
individual’s lead and / or the leads of the family to support the individual’s goals
and wishes as much as possible.
Help individuals make and maintain shared, respectful, relationships with others
in the community, to support meaningful participation and inclusion. This includes
participation in employment, volunteer, recreational, and other social settings.
Understand community opportunities and issues to help the individual access
and participate in community life.
Model socially appropriate behaviors (for both the individual and the community)
and assist and encourage the individual to make and maintain appropriate
community connections. This may sometimes include acting as a support
coach.’
Support community members to welcome and include individuals and help
generic services to provide sensitive support and appropriate accommodations
that meet the individual’s needs.
Be aware of the individual’s physical, social, and recreational environments, and
act to minimize risks and maximize participation and inclusion, and when unsure,
ask for help from more experienced people.
Be aware of and follow policies, practices, and operational protocols; this includes
knowing and following medical protocols and standing orders for medication and
other remedies.
Help individuals achieve their goals by developing basic life skills, to build their
confidence, competence, and participation within their community networks. This
may include modeling desirable behaviors for life skill development and
academic skill development.
Essential Functions :
- Assists with daily living skills.
- Plans, organizes and implements skill-building activities.
- Follows service plans and program guidelines.
- Maintains program charts and finance sheets.
- Transportation; assist individuals in accessing community resources.
- Assists individuals with hygiene, grooming, and medication admin.
- Assists individuals with diet as per the Canada Food Guide.
- Maintains strict confidentiality of any and all personal information

Education, Training, and Experience :
The Community Disability Services Worker role is critical to the success of the
individuals supported. It requires a positive attitude that acknowledges the gifts
and passions of persons with disabilities, an aptitude for service and support, and
a relevant knowledge and skill base. Preferred traits and qualifications include
the following :
A positive attitude and belief that persons with disabilities have the right
and responsibility to define and act on their life choices and seek active
participation in the community.
An understanding of the opportunities and options available to persons
with disabilities, mindful of cultural and ethnic sensitivity.
The equivalent of basic secondary school education from a recognized
institution, with additional specialized training and / or demonstrated
successful experience in a relevant discipline / setting as defined by the
employer based on individual needs and services required.
If providing service to children, a basic awareness of the stages and
norms for childhood development including socialization and recreation
play) as well as childhood-related issues and conditions (e.g., FASD).
A practical understanding of relevant general and organization-specific
policies, procedures, operational protocols, legislation, professional ethics
codes and guidelines, contract terms and conditions, and other practice
guidelines.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team. In the case of service
to children, this includes that ability to function effectively within a family
environment.
Basic listening, observation, and interpretive skills to support judgments
about what actions will resolve issues; this includes knowing when to ask
for help from a more experienced person.
Effective communication skills, basic coaching and mentoring skills, with
the ability to use different approaches.
Effective time-management and priority-setting skills, and the ability to
balance competing demands / priorities and deal with competing opinions.
This includes knowing when to ask for help or refer someone to more
experienced staff.

Relevant knowledge and the ability to model and support the
development of basic living, personal and social skills.
First Aid and CPR certification, and possibly additional training to support
specific individuals’ needs.
Knowledge of basic rules and guidelines for staying healthy and safe
while providing services, as appropriate.
Basic computer literacy that meets the requirements of the specific role
and agency / service.
A basic understanding of community resources available to support the
individual’s participation and inclusion, as well as how and when to
access them.
Work different shift schedules and physically challenging situations, if
required.

Additional Information :
The Community Disability Services Worker must be able to function
independently in a variety of different environments.

Note :
- The positions will be contractual, temporary, part-time, or full-time and on-call, all depending on operational hours at the time of hire.
- Candidates should be available to work in all of our community homes in Calgary, Rocky View County, and Airdrie.
