You will be joining our UX team, reporting to our manager of user research. You will collaborate cross-functionally with best-in-class product managers, designers, developers, and more, and own the entire research process from ideation to the delivery of insights to the team and our executives.
The Senior UX Researcher will need experience in both design research and human factors and be responsible for executing a variety of user research studies to support the development and iteration of software products, as well as the advancement of customer empathy.
As a collaboration lead, you will be building and maintaining relationships with strategic customers, and establishing collaboration agreements that facilitate customer involvement in key UX activities.
This role will require the successful candidate to reside in Nova Scotia with 30% travel requirement
If you join us, you will :
- Lead impactful, meaningful end-to-end research projects, across Varian’s products, that support a patient’s entire cancer journey.
- Connect directly with customers to establish collaboration agreements, in adherence to our legal and compliance standards.
- Partner with cross-functional teammates - interaction and visual designers, product managers, and other stakeholders to identify research needs, goals, and questions, and then plan and execute tactical and foundational research.
- Develop plans for user research activities across the product lifecycle from early-stage design and product definition activities to post-release assessment.
- Understand and incorporate business and technical requirements in research strategies.
- Design and conduct a variety of research studies including contextual inquiry, user interviews, task analysis, card sorting, expert reviews, design walkthroughs, formative and summative usability tests, and surveys.
- Conduct various in-person research and co-creation activities and workshops.
- Synthesize research findings into meaningful themes and translate these results into actionable user centered design and product goals.
- Evangelize research findings to stakeholders through written reports and oral presentations.
- Represent our current and potential clients’ experiences by conveying insights in crisp, clear, and actionable ways.
- Help our team continuously identify and learn about current and potential opportunities to better serve our users, inspire product strategy, and encourage design iteration.
- Advance the team’s research toolbox by trying out new research techniques and deliverables.

Relevant experience and mindset we would like to see :
- 8+ years of experience of industry experience in user research with an emphasis on research related to software product design.
- A Master of Human Factors, Human Computer Interaction, Cognitive Science, or closely related field is preferred.
- Workshop facilitation skills, both in-person and remote.
- Excellent knowledge of all aspects of user centered design process and the ability to apply them flexibly across a variety of project types.
- Extensive experience working with designers, product managers, and engineers in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment.
- A passion to build user-focused products that solve critical problems.
- A deep knowledge and plenty of practical experience with qualitative and quantitative user research methods.
- Experience with remote user research tools and ability to run prototype testing.
- Proven project management skills and track record of delivering commitments on time.
- Ability to prioritize time between multiple projects and stay flexible with changing schedules and projects while working with multiple teams.
- A collaborative mindset with a proven track record of working well with multidisciplinary and multicultural teams.
- Excellent analytical ability, especially regarding observation of user behavior.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, and an ability to represent Varian in discussions with strategic customers.
- A desire to always be learning new things .
