The Senior Manager, Sales Tax is responsible for (i) providing support to the Director, Sales Tax in fulfilling the compliance, accounting, planning and advisory functions with respect to federal goods & services tax (GST), including harmonized sales tax (HST), and provincial sales tax (for the three non-harmonized provinces) for the Bank and Canadian subsidiaries, (ii) independently managing the sales tax responsibilities of the domestic subsidiaries and, (iii) taking a leading role in the sales tax automation for the Bank and domestic subsidiaries.

Is this role right for you? In this role, you will :

  • Accurate and timely completion of the sales tax compliance of Bank and Domestic subsidiaries :
  • Prepare or review the annual GST return and quarterly installment payments for the Bank and domestic subsidiaries.
  • Review and document the input tax credit (ITC) allocation methodology for Bank and domestic subsidiaries.
  • Oversight and management of information systems for sales tax :
  • Recommend the development of new / enhanced commodity tax reporting systems / policies, procedures and controls to meet requirements, changing circumstances and existing inefficiencies for the Bank and its domestic subsidiaries.
  • Act as a sales tax subject matter expert :
  • Provide assistance to Director, Sales Tax in providing advice and counsel to business / finance units on the sales tax implications of new products and services.
  • Assist in reviewing intercompany transactions and transactions with external suppliers to ensure the transactions are completed in a sales tax efficient manner.
  • Complete in-depth analysis of transactions of the Bank and its domestic subsidiaries with foreign affiliates to determine the sales tax obligation. This would also require preparing the required documentation and arguments to support the sales tax position taken by the Bank and its domestic subsidiaries.
  • Manage the sales tax audits conducted by the tax authorities of the Bank and Domestic subsidiaries :
  • Liaise with government tax auditors as part of the sales tax audits of the Banks and domestic subsidiaries.
  • Prepare technical analysis to respond to audit queries of these entities.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of GST, HST and PST legislation, jurisprudence and government assessing practices to understand the potential impact to the Bank's operations and to pro-actively communicate these changes to the business units through email correspondence, one-on-one discussions or group meetings / presentations.
  • Actively pursues effective and efficient operations of his / her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank's Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML / ATF / sanctions and conduct risk.

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? - We'd love to work with you if you have :

  • Professional accounting designation (CPA - CA, CPA - CGA, or CPA - CMA)
  • Minimum of 8 years of dedicated sales tax experience, preferably in a financial institution or serving clients in the financial services sector.
  • Completion of the CPA in-Depth GST / HST course is required. Completion of GST / HST course in Financial services would be an asset.
  • Experience in data analytics tools such as Alteryx.
