Duties
As a Coxswain with the Canadian Hydrographic Service, you will play a critical role in collecting data necessary to produce authoritative nautical charts and publications.
In this role, you will be responsible for navigating the vessel during the collection of hydrographic survey data.
Hydrographers use multibeam echo-sounders to calculate the distance to the sea floor. These tools measure depths by bouncing sound waves off the seabed and measuring the length of time that it takes for the echo to return.
Surveys done this way follow pre-planned lines along which the surveying vessel steers. How closely the lines are spaced depends on the complexity of the seabed.
In hazardous waters, complete coverage of the bottom is required.
- As coxswain, you will work closely with the on-board hydrographer and / or the Hydrographer-In-Charge in order to safely launch, recover, and secure the survey vessel at various ports / marinas;
- perform pre-departure checks of all mechanical and safety equipment; record deficiencies as well as keep daily logs of vessel usage;
safely navigate the vessel during survey operations utilizing various means including but not limited to electronic charts, radar, and on-board hydrographic acquisition software.
Intent of the process
When you apply to this selection process, you are not applying for an immediate vacancy. Applications received from this job advertisement will be periodically downloaded as staffing needs are identified by the hiring manager.
A pool of candidates may be established and used to staff positions on a casual basis.
Casual workers are hired for specified periods that may not exceed 90 working days in one calendar year. A casual contract may be on an as and when required basis whereby a person with no assigned hours of work reports when needed and usually in response to an urgent need.
