The Senior Scientist, Health Economist provides qualified expertise in their specialty area and advanced scientific input and expertise to public health initiatives at the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC).

This role is responsible for the design, conduct, and completion of health economics and health services research to support the expansion of vaccine programs and evidence-informed decision making.

This role will provide leadership and direction, and work collaboratively with the medical director and the immunization team to establish and maintain immunization programs.

The Senior Scientist, Health Economist will also lead ICER based analyses and conduct cost-benefit analyses. Leads and contributes to the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of medical / scientific processes, procedures and measures that align with BCCDC’s overall objectives and provincial mandate while ensuring the requirements of key internal and external stakeholders are met.

The Senior Scientist works to develop research grants to attract external funding and works with other senior scientists to establish new initiatives.

What you’ll do

  • Acquires and analyzes data related to emerging issues in public health to provide accurate and timely information to guide public health interventions and public health policy.
  • Designs, conducts, interprets and reports on studies in relation to a variety of public health programs, ensuring outcomes appropriately inform decision-making.

Collaborates with external and internal partners to better understand their needs and to gain support. Formulates data collection instruments and prepares project charters.

Researches and develops tools, templates and techniques for effective management of studies. Collaborates with investigators and other partners external to the BCCDC in developing and completing analyses and / or evaluations.

  • Develops recommendations and policy advice by providing reports to the Service Line Medical Director.
  • Prepares academic manuscripts and technical reports and disseminates findings including publishing work as required. Prepares abstracts, posters, and oral presentations for conference submissions.

Represents BCCDC in presenting information at scientific conferences as required.

  • Prepares reports and proposals for grant applications to funding agencies such as CFI, CIHR, NIH and NSERC. Participates in project proposal reviews and progress reviews.
  • Keeps up-to-date regarding new initiatives, developments and trends in their area of specialty through literature review, contact with peers at other organizations, professional associations and attendance at seminars, workshop and education programs.

Communicates information and makes recommendations to the Medical Director.

Plans, coordinates and delivers instruction, training and direction to staff, medical residents, subspecialty fellows, medical undergraduates, graduate students, contractors and other health care professionals, technologists, student technologists and / or postdoctoral research fellows as required, in the theory and practice of public health programs.

Qualifications

  • A level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a PhD in relevant field and seven (7) years of related research training / experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of relevant database, spreadsheet, statistical, graphical, presentation, communication and web software applications as appropriate.

  • Ability to exercise independent judgment in facilitating decisions and communications on input parameters into medical / scientific models.
  • Demonstrated flexibility in responding to program and strategic priorities.
  • Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).
  • Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).

Job Type : Regular, Full-Time

Salary Range : $102,938 - $147,974 / year. The starting salary for this position would be determined with consideration of the successful candidate’s relevant education and experience, and would be in alignment with the provincial compensation reference plan.

Salary will be prorated accordingly for part time roles.

Location : 655 West 12th Avenue, Vancouver BC, V5Z 4R4
