Health and Safety Officer
Welland Hydro-Electric System Corp. (WHESC) is a progressive electric distribution utility delivering electricity in a safe & reliable manner while maintaining a high quality of service to meet the needs of our 26,000+ customers within the City of Welland.
Main Responsibilities :
- Implement the organizations Health and Safety Program including policies and standard operating procedures and monitor against trends, new industry practices, legislative changes, and business changes to ensure that the program stays current and dynamic.
- Assess health and safety training needs for the organization, determine methods of delivery (i.e., internal / external provider) and establish an annual training plan.
- Implement / organize internal and external health and safety program audits and evaluations.
- Participate in field inspections to assist in monitoring compliance with organizational and legislative health and safety requirements.
Deliver observations to senior management and provide incident reduction recommendations and improvement measures.
- Perform pre-qualification of contractors for health and safety compliance and deliver contractor health and safety orientations as necessary.
- Review incident reporting and ensure corrective actions are implemented and evaluated for effectiveness.
- Maintain schedules to ensure adherence to legislative requirements and milestones pertaining to health, safety and environmental regulations are met.
- Generate and deliver organizational health and safety communications, as necessary.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Requirements :
- Post-secondary degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Safety Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Sciences or a closely related field.
- 3-5 years’ experience in a Health & Safety role for an electrical utility or related environment.
- Achievement of the Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) Certification considered an asset.
- Advanced Knowledge of IHSA Electrical Utility Safety Rules.
- Intermediate Knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Must maintain a valid Class G drivers’ license.
