Legal Counsel - Banking & Payments Regulatory

We are looking for a skilled mid-level lawyer to join our in-house legal team and support our regulatory, commercial, and strategic initiatives.
Role Overview
As a key member of our legal team, you will provide pragmatic legal advice across a broad range of banking and payments matters, helping to support the Bank’s business initiatives while ensuring compliance with Canadian regulatory regimes.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide legal advice on compliance with Canadian banking and payments laws, rules and regulations, including the Bank Act (Canada), consumer protection legislation, payment card network rules and other applicable federal and provincial frameworks.
- Assist with the drafting, review and negotiation of commercial contracts, including services agreements, program agreements and technology agreements.
- Prepare and review cardholder agreements in compliance with applicable laws and regulatory requirements.
- Monitor regulatory developments and advise on impacts to business operations.
- Work closely with compliance, risk, and business teams to identify regulatory risks and provide practical solutions.
- Work on regulatory filings, submissions, and interactions with regulators.
- Support internal policies, procedures, and governance frameworks to ensure adherence to regulatory requirements.
- Work with external counsel and assist with related budgeting.
Qualifications
5–8 years of legal experience, in-house or at a law firm.Exposure to banking and payments legislation and regulation.Experience advising on commercial contracts, regulatory compliance, and risk management.Excellent drafting, negotiation, and communication skills.Ability to provide pragmatic, business-focused legal advice in a fast-paced environment.JD / LLB from a recognized law school and membership in a Canadian law society.Location : Calgary, Alberta or Toronto, Ontario – In Office Work
