Job Summary
Plans, organizes, instructs and leads guitar lessons for participants from children through to adults, ensuring a positive and safe learning environment.
Job Duties
- Facilitates, leads and supervises the program.
- Organizes and writes lesson plans to be handed in by week two of the program; develops lesson plans specific to the abilities of each group; reviews lesson plans with the Recreation Supervisor / Program Coordinator prior to class and submits at the end of each session.
- Prepares and organizes program equipment and supplies, maintaining inventory and reporting items needing replacement.
- Keeps attendance records and follows up with participants who have extended absences; reports new participant names to the Program Coordinator / Recreation Supervisor.
- Ensures all participant emergency and medical information is obtained on the first day via a personal data form.
- Informs participants of upcoming events, program changes or cancellations.
- Meets with parents (if needed) before or after class time.
- Directly guides volunteers and PT Program Assistants as required.
- Advises Program Coordinator / Recreation Supervisor of any customer service issues, complaints or inquiries.
- Ensures safety at all times, enforcing safety regulations as set out by the City of Markham’s sports, fitness, arts and leisure programs policies and procedures.
- Ensures the site, equipment and supplies are appropriate to the activity to reduce risk to staff and participants.
- Manages the buddy system for children aged 6–12 when using the washroom; escorts preschool children; locks and unlocks the facility as required.
Requirements
Completion of a High School Diploma with an above‑average grade in Music.Minimum age of 16 years.Minimum of 3 years of demonstrated expertise in music theory and technique, able to read and teach sheet music on the guitar; at least 2 years of additional experience teaching music to individuals of all ages and ability levels.Currently active in the field of music.Knowledge of basic guitar principles and operation / maintenance of guitar equipment.Current Standard First Aid and CPR “C”.High‑Five Certificate and adherence to the principles of Healthy Child Development (ages 6 to 12).Technical and practical training at an advanced level.Ability to read, understand, follow and enforce safety procedures.Excellent verbal and written communication skills, leadership skills, customer service skills and sensitivity to interact with diverse patrons, parents and staff.Ability to teach basic level (not competition level) music to children, youth and adults using the guitar.Core Behaviours
