Reports to : Product Design Supervisor

Job Purpose

The Senior Industrial Designer is the design team(s) specialist to create innovative new designs which fulfill the company's strategic goals while integrating the needs of marketing, sales and manufacturing departments. The Senior Industrial Designer’s responsibilities include the design and development of new products from concept through to production, drafting specifications for components, assemblies and manufacturing, consulting on the creation of prototype models or samples and fine‑tuning of designs to prepare for New Product Launches, Special Projects, and Passthrough Products, as required.

Subject Matter Expert (SME) lead for assigned product division; keep up to date with new product offerings within the product portfolio and product roadmap. Make recommendations based on research to PM and R&D Management in order to maintain and / or upgrade current product line‑up, or to maintain relevance in the market.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

• Define concepts or ideas, considering competitive products, benchmarking, trends & lessons learned
• Sketches and simple 3D concept models, rendered images, technical scope documents suitable for obtaining project approval (including presenting ideas to R&D team and management)
• Focus on aesthetic design and appearance of finished units and accessories
• Provide insight to the design team on new concepts and trends through own research and ongoing collaboration with Product Marketing team
• Photo‑realistic 3D renderings to clearly communicate design intent to key stakeholders (internal and external)
• Detailed 3D models suitable for prototype and mass production, including Design for Assembly, Manufacture and Serviceability - including installation
• Design for cost, robustness, reliability and quality; considering project targets and project deadlines and whilst working in collaboration with other departments, other sites and outside vendors
• Validate the design concept : (a) Using recognized design tools, including design reviews, functional analysis, (and, where applicable, input to simulation), tolerance stack‑ups for fit, form and function etc. (b) Actively participate in Stage Gate runs to practically validate part fit, form and function, manufacturability and drawing accuracy
• Create and maintain detailed 2D drawings and specifications where applicable. Create bill of materials, including all necessary details required to populate ERP system. Drawing release, (after checking), for prototype, purchasing, samples, etc. Ensure latest data (2D and 3D) is maintained in company CAD database
• Updating or supporting changes to existing models, drawings, based on Continuous Improvements, Change Notices and / or corrections
• Provide drawings and data to support creation of product manuals, work instructions, compliance / certification, service parts, marketing information, etc.
• Photo‑realistic 3D renderings to showcase design, and to provide high quality visual assets to Brand Marketing team
• Assist Product or Engineering Manager with the specification of market requirements, (physical, technical, and aesthetic), for current and future products by conducting comprehensive market research, supported by on‑going visits / meetings to / with customers (internal and external) and non‑customers, (associations, bodies, etc.)
• Make recommendations based on research for the development and ongoing maintenance of a detailed and overarching product portfolio strategy and product roadmap
• Provide and maintain an in-depth analysis for all aspects of market, industry, regulatory environment, and competition
• Develop hands‑on, in‑depth knowledge of competitive products, organise relevant benchmarking and maintain technical analysis of competitive strengths and weaknesses of current and planned product portfolio
• Support market assessments and competitive analyses to identify product opportunities whether new or redesigned to address different / future needs
• Research to be conducted both independently and collaboratively with cross functional teams
• Responsible to ensure new product introductions meet WSL expectations for aesthetic appearance, consistent fit and finish and robust operation, by evaluation at each phase of development; using tools as "test to failure", survey data, early phase field testing, analysing similar product, customer solutions data, ensuring lessons learnt and design checklists.
