The Data Analytics Co-op Student will join the EVRAZ NA Steel Operations team near Regina, Saskatchewan, for a 4- or 8-month term.
As part of the Operations group, they will work on data engineering and analysis projects to optimize mill processes and enhance operational understanding.
The student will gain hands-on experience with tools like SQL, Python, and Apache Iceberg, with opportunities to introduce machine learning models to process steps that currently lack data-driven improvements.
Responsibilities include participating in data analysis, modeling projects, and collaborating with team members in planning and execution.
This position offers exposure to various aspects of steel operations, including steelmaking, casting, and hot rolling, and a chance to make meaningful contributions to process improvements.
- Develop and implement tools for data gathering and visualization, tailored for users unfamiliar with SQL.
- Build and apply data models using extensive "Big Data" from historical process recordings for enhanced understanding and anomaly detection.
- Collaborate with Operations, Quality, and Research teams to ensure effective use and interpretation of tools and models, improving decision-making quality.
- Design and optimize algorithms to facilitate data manipulation and reporting.
- Present data insights through visualizations and dashboards to aid various stakeholders in understanding complex information.
- Analyze and enhance Big Data structures and workflows to reduce storage and compute requirements, improving efficiency.
Skills / Experience
- Currently enrolled in an Engineering or postgraduate Co-op program at a recognized Canadian university and eligible for a Co-op work placement.
- Proficiency in Python for data analysis and machine learning.
- Experience with SQL, data visualization tools, and Big Data systems (e.g., Apache Iceberg).
- Experience in the steel industry, particularly with process data, is an asset.
- Strong problem-solving skills across various domains.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Commitment to safety and a proactive approach to learning.
Work Environment / Physical Requirements
- Typical administrative / office environment : office can be noisy due to adjacent process buildings
- Environmental conditions : some visits to the plant floor will be necessary, where there can be extreme temperature and noise (with appropriate Personal Protective Equipment)
- Hazards : includes such physical conditions, as proximity to moving mechanical parts / vehicles, electrical current, exposure to high heat or to chemicals
- Light work : exerting up to 20 lb of force occasionally, and / or up to 10 lb frequently
