The Opportunity

Location : Dartmouth, Nova Scotia

Type of Employment : Regular, Full-Time - On Site

Salary : $47.53 per hour, as per the NSPI / IBEW Collective Agreement

Closing Date : January 31, 2026

We are looking for a Gas Turbine Operator Technician to join our Power Production team. Reporting to the Combustion Turbines Superintendent, you will be responsible for performing routine mechanical, electrical, controls, instrumentation maintenance, operation and repair and troubleshooting on Pratt & Whitney, General Electric Gas Turbines and Auxiliaries within the Province.

As a Gas Turbine Operator Technician

  • You will be responsible for performing routine mechanical, electrical, controls, and instrumentation maintenance, repair and troubleshooting on Pratt & Whitney, General Electric Gas Turbines and Auxiliaries within the Province.
  • You will work effectively as a member of the Gas Turbine Work Team and be capable of performing in a self-directed manner.
  • You will be an integral member of Nova Scotia Power’s Team, working closely with the Energy Control Center, Regional Operations, other Power Generation groups, and various contractors and as well support all ISO 14001 processes and initiatives.
  • You will be required to participate in a Standby 7-day rotation.
  • Successful candidates will be assigned a starting Apprenticeship level based on experience and skill set.
  • You will be temporarily assigned to other locations to assist other areas when required and will be expected to travel throughout the province.
  • You will be responsible for personal safety and that of your co-workers by observing all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations and Safe Work Practices.
  • You will be required to participate in regulatory training and be willing to participate in on-the-job training or training programs that support the development of additional skills.
  • It is the responsibility of the Gas Turbine Operator Technician to ensure that NSPI is in compliance with all NERC / NPCC reliability standards related to Power Production.

This position is considered a safety sensitive position. As such, the successful candidate must comply with the Emera Alcohol and Drug Policy which requires a confidential pre-employment alcohol and drug test in accordance with the Emera Alcohol and Drug Procedure.

  • You must have a Grade XII education or equivalent.
  • In addition, you must have Engineering and Technology (Instrumentation and Controls) OR Industrial Electrician.
  • Candidates must have a good knowledge in the operation of Gas Turbine Engines, must be familiar with PLC programs, vibration system, and DC systems. A minimum of 2 years' experience maintaining and operating gas turbines as found in a generating station or similar industry is an asset.
  • You possess the skills to provide mentorship and coaching to others.
  • You have strong oral and written communication skills and interact well with others, as well as demonstrated leadership capabilities.
  • You have strong computer skills and can deal with multiple tasks and often changing demands.
  • You will be available for rotational standby duty.
  • You are self‑motivated, adaptable to change and willing to work to contribute to the team environment and workplace.
  • You must be willing to travel if required within and outside of Canada for business.
  • The successful candidate must possess a valid NS driver’s license with a minimum of two years driving experience.
  • Your primary residence must be located within 30 minutes of the defined headquarters.
  • You must possess a valid passport for air travel outside of Canada if required.
  • If no qualified candidates apply, consideration will be given to applicants who have significant experience on Gas Turbine engines. These Candidates will be considered Apprentice Gas Turbine Operator Technicians and will be responsible to complete an apprenticeship program within Nova Scotia Power.
  • Work Conditions and Physical Capabilities

  • Must be able to lift 45 lbs. from the floor to waist level on an occasional basis and 67 lbs. on a minimal basis.
  • Able to carry 50 lbs. with both hands on an occasional basis, with the overall ability to carry 26 lbs. on an occasional basis.
  • Able to push and pull with whole and upper body strength up to 50 lbs. on occasional basis.
  • Perform static reaching at waist level frequently and from below waist to overhead level on an occasional basis.
  • Perform frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, and neck flexion movements.
  • Perform occasional squatting, kneeling, crouching, climbing, and neck extension and rotation movements.
  • Perform sitting, crawling, and twisting on a minimal basis.
  • Ability to perform fine finger manipulation and possess a simple to firm grasp while performing turning and pinching motions.
