Position Overview

The Controller plays a pivotal role in ensuring the integrity, transparency, and efficiency of Brandon University’s financial operations. Reporting to the Director of Finance & Registration Services, this position oversees all core accounting functions—including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger—while leading audit preparation, multi-entity financial statement reporting, and compliance initiatives. The Controller provides strategic leadership in system automation and process improvements, fostering operational excellence and supporting institutional priorities.

Key Responsibilities

Accounting Operations (30%)

• Oversee day-to-day accounting processes, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely month-end closures.
• Implement robust internal controls and manage relationships with financial institutions.

Financial Statements & Audit (20%)

• Lead preparation of multi-entity financial statements and coordinate external audits.
• Ensure adherence to accounting standards and regulatory requirements.

Institutional Reporting (10%)

• Support provincial, CAUBO, and pension reporting, and validate reports prepared by team members.

Leadership & Team Development (10%)

• Mentor and manage accounting staff, fostering a culture of professional excellence and continuous improvement.

Policy & Business Operations (15%)

• Develop and maintain financial policies and procedures in alignment with governance and regulations.

System Implementation & Automation (15%)

• Drive system upgrades and automation projects, ensuring data integrity and stakeholder engagement during transitions.

Qualifications

• CPA designation required; degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline.
• Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in accounting or financial management, including supervisory roles.
• Strong knowledge of financial reporting, audit coordination, and regulatory compliance.
• Proven leadership and change management skills.
• Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.

Managers & Professional Officers MPO-VI: $101,175 annually.
