Estimator / Project Coordinator
Heavy Civil, Bridge & Marine Construction | British Columbia
| LOCATION Prince George or North Vancouver, BC | COMPENSATION $70,000-$100,000+ | CAREER PATH Estimating | Project Delivery | Operations |
We are partnering with an established Canadian heavy civil contractor specializing in technically challenging bridge, piling, marine, industrial and remote-access construction throughout British Columbia and Western Canada. The work ranges from smaller rapid-response assignments through to major projects valued in the tens of millions, with a strong mix of private-sector, resource and infrastructure work.
This is primarily an estimating role to start, with the opportunity to gain field experience and develop toward estimating, project management or construction operations. The intent is to build people who understand both how work is priced and how it is actually built.
MUST HAVES
- 1-2+ years of construction experience in Canada, ideally within heavy civil, infrastructure, foundations, bridges, marine construction or a related environment.
- Ability to read construction drawings, specifications and tender documents, with a working understanding of takeoffs, bills of materials, pile schedules and scopes of work.
- Strong Excel and general computer skills, with comfort using AI tools such as ChatGPT or Claude to improve efficiency without relying on them for accuracy.
- Driven, self-motivated and accountable, with the work ethic and critical-thinking ability to work through roadblocks and figure things out.
- Willingness to spend time in the field and develop a practical understanding of crews, equipment, construction methods and productivity.
- Based in or willing to relocate to Prince George or North Vancouver, BC.
NICE TO HAVES
- Previous estimating, Project Coordinator, Field Coordinator or Project Engineer experience within heavy civil or infrastructure construction.
- Experience with bridge construction, rehabilitation, piling, deep foundations and/or marine construction.
- Exposure to mining, oil and gas, forestry, industrial or remote-access projects.
- Hands-on field experience around excavators, cranes, pile-driving equipment or heavy civil crews.
- Experience completing quantity takeoffs, obtaining subcontractor or supplier pricing, and/or using estimating software such as B2W.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Review tender packages and set up estimates using established company templates and processes.
- Complete quantity takeoffs and build labour, equipment and material requirements for estimates.
- Obtain and review subcontractor, supplier and vendor pricing, working with partners to identify better pricing, alternative methodologies and efficiencies.
- Build estimates using Excel and company estimating systems, supporting larger bids while progressively taking ownership of smaller private and public estimates through final review and submission.
- Attend pre-bid site visits to understand site conditions, access, logistics and construction challenges.
- Support estimating across bridge, piling, marine, concrete, structural steel, heavy-lift and general heavy civil scopes on projects ranging from rapid-response work to multimillion-dollar infrastructure projects.
- Take on field assignments to understand how estimated work is executed, including tracking labour, equipment, quantities, production and actual performance against estimate assumptions.
- Prepare daily reports and assist with inspections, quality documentation and other project controls while supporting field projects.
- Support crews with coordination of materials, equipment, parts and other requirements needed to keep work moving.
- Look for ways to improve estimating processes, tools and construction methodologies, taking ownership of problems and bringing solutions forward.
